Seafire 46
This project might have a better chance of success if it were more ambitious – with a real target, such as the nearly-complete Mosquito in New Zealand. Buying a tangible Mosquito for the nation might get bigger contributions flowing – rather like the Vulcan – rather than trying a scractchbuild/dataplate job which will take many years to complete.
Just my 2p.
Absolutely agree!
Change the goal/business plan to purchase an almost complete aircraft, shrink the timeframe, and potential investors will gain a tangible quick return on their efforts.
Cannon armed, SEAC scheme BBMF Hurricane just flew north over Great Waltham, Essex.
All flying Mosquito projects should be done in NZ. Its a no-brainer. There is an established Mosquito industry there with very experienced companies and individuals involved.
I know very well the amount of experience and learning that has happened there in the past 20 years. As QldSpitty says, why re-invent the wheel.
Red tail Mustang over Billericay at lunchtime today.
A more worthy aviation cause would be hard to find. Let’s hope that will fund a WW1 hangar: there’s one still with its roof (just) at Filton…
There was an original ww1 37/39sqn hangar in Essex at Moreton…. I tried to save it, but developers moved in.
Stowmaries is a little gem.
Hi Meddle,
I helped dismantle/transport the Birmingham Meteor WD646 to North Weald, around 1990-91. I first met Steve around this time, and visited a couple of sites that were due to be cleared of aircraft wreckage with his team. One site in Essex now long gone (not Foulness) had been used as a test establishment. We saw some smaller TSR2 parts including part of an elevator or fin, being the most recognisable.
I visited once he told me he owned the TT20 from Birmingham ATC. The Canberra pr9 cockpit was there when I visited.
Yes, WD646 now at Manston.
I’d forgotten about the PR9.
One of the instruments in the Hornet came from Hanningfield.
The aircraft preservation scene owes a lot to the yard at Stock, so many cockpits and parts were saved and sold by Graham and Steve. Happy memories of the Wattisham Phantoms and St Athan Buccaneers as well as the countless other types to go through the yard.
Didn’t Steve own a JP and also the Meteor NF11 now at Manston?
Being very local to me, that yard was regularly visited right up until the early 2000’s.
The most numerous types there from the late 90′ until then were the Phantoms a few Canberras, and I think a Buccaneer.
I missed out on what must have been the golden years between the 60’s-80’s???
If anyone is interested in a German copy of this book for a reduced cost, send me a pm.
Cool, I wondered what that was.
Just saw the tail of a fast radial disappear into into the distance… Twice!
Forgot to ad.
On Sunday afternoon the Seafury headed off past me to the NNE and returned about 50 mins later I am guessing to get some height for air testing, stalls etc, virtually over the top of the house on her return towards North Weald, lovely sound it was too!
“Sunday evening around 18.30 Two Spits in formation about 1/2mile E of me heading N from Dunsfold? Clipped wing and possibly MH434 dropping down to go under the Stansted N/E TMZ” TA out
I saw these as well passing over White Notley.
Sally B just heading south over Great Waltham.
Hopefully the same again today DC
Excellent, I will be ready with the camera this time! ?
