meteor scheme mix-up
Hi
the black and red markings are definitely 601aux squadron based at north weald in the 50’s. the striped tail was the co’s aircraft. It was silver overall though, not camoflaged. 604aux squadron were also based there to at the same time. they had red and orange triangles with overall silver aircraft.
I have several photos that I will try to post in the next few days showing such.
I used to have to cover my ears as a lightening/tornado did a low pass at an airshow!
“I don’t care what it is……, just play it loud….ok?”
loudest formation
Very early 90’s, I was passing by RAF wattisham, and decided to drive up to the open end of the airfield. My friend and I parked the car, and walked the path to the fence line. There was a heat haze at the far end of the airfield, but because of the bump in the runway, and the prevailing wind, we did not see or hear what was coming!
At the time the phantoms were using their flying hours up, and we got treated to an inpromptu formation take-off. If only we had a camera with us! needless to say we were deafened. It was a nice way to go though!
a few lancaster pics
Not to duplicate others pics, I have included some more unusual shots of the lancaster.
photos
my photos are currently being processed. I will post the best this afternoon.
MK4B GGS
Another variant of the MK4 GGS family wasthe MK4B gyro gun site, as fitted to the DH Hornet and (possibly) the Sea Fury. Does anyone have one for sale/trade?
Big thanks to the BBMF
It was a great evening from both a social and engineering aspect.
My group was showed round by a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic airframe fitter. Alas, I didn’t get her name, but I would like to give a personal thanks for a very enjoyable evening, and to all of the staff that run the event. They are doing a fantastic job, and the aircraft couldn’t be in better hands. My Grandfather was a Lancaster mechanic, and it was particularly special to spend some time inside the aircraft.
p.s. Am very jelouse of their day job! Would trade any day….where do I apply?
New parts available.
Sorry to not have replied sooner, Texan Tomcat.
Yes, I do have parts to make up the rudder pedals, including most of the pulley brackets located in the cockpit. Also, I have just had a new control grip cast. I have a lower column to attach it to, but currently lack the brackets to attach it to the floor. These will have to be cast from scratch, if I can find the drawings in time.
I have the only known throttle. It came from a fire dump. So it doesn’t look great, but it is original.
Made some money this year!
I came away with a bag full of BA bolts, sold some surplus items, and generally had a good chin-wag with some of the people that I have got to know over the years. But alas, it was pretty thin on the ground with new “finds”.
; )
“tailgate me then….come on!”
Horsa praise
It just goes to show what a group of motivated, and like minded people can do with a little money and a hangar! Many major UK museums can take a leaf out of their book, and imagine what they could do with their greater resources?
I think this project deserves the sort of praise that the reconstructed halifaxes, wellington, and Mosquito NFII, etc.
🙂
lysander wheel pictures
The lysander wheel is certainly similar, but the extra bolts located on the rim between the spokes are significantly different.
