    Worst airshow

Without a doubt….I’m with Moggy on this one: Mildenhall. With so many potentially exciting aircraft in attendance, and the memory of fantastic late 80’s, early 90’s displays, it turned into the most dissapointing event.

The queue’s to get in, the terrible weather, the much hyped american fighters and bombers, once only flypasts, with no aerobatics, at altitudes that make you wonder which airfield that they are displaying at!

On the plus side, their burgers are great, and the often outragous displays by European air forces!

DH Hornet project – mini update

    All

I will prepare a full update with pictures in the next few weeks. However, in brief, I have assembled all of the instrument panels, finished the pilots floor, and assembled the seat onto it’s frame work. I’m now working on the rudder pedals, and the LH/RH instrument consoles.

The http://www.dhhornet50.net website is steadily being added to. This will include more new photos of recent parts. We have had a complete and cowled PR.22 sea hornet merlin engine loaned to us for the re-union in May 2005. This will sit nicely with the cockpit, rear fuselage, and wheels.

The cockpit I am assembling is a F.Mk.1 Hornet, and will include a lot of original components.

I was always under the impression that de Havilland was not written DeHavilland. Please refer to the latest edition of The Moth for confirmation.

You are correct. Just in case there is a copyright on the original text, I chose to change it a little for my headed paperwork and business cards.

    DH Hornet

With the correct backing, and organisations like the one’s that have done the Me262’s, Oskars, FW190’s, a flying DeHavilland Hornet is possible.

    Vampire pilot’s notes

    Hi

I have a copy of vampire T.11 pilots notes than you can have. Also 7/8ths of a full A.P for airframe servicing.

    p.m me for details.

    surely for the same reason??

    dh98 to dh103 design progression

I cannot remember the exact details, but at the time when the dh98 mosquito successor was first proposed, the dh100 vampire, and dh103 hornet were on the drawing board as well.

There were engineering proposals put forward for having a larger mosquito powered by sabres, but these were in too short supply, and the resulting airframe would have poorer performance on paper than a tweaked current production model.

dehavilland aircraft company had seen the future in the shape of jet aircraft, and it was only by a slim chance that the hornet was produced at all.

As for “glue technology”, there are plenty of photo’s of hornets with broken backs! This may seem blasphemous coming from myself, but the sooner dehavilland started making aluminium aircraft, the better!! A composite of glued wood was a great “non-strategic” material to to use on an aircraft with a short useful combat life, but this is also the reason why no hornets or mosquitos fly now, compared to many of their contemporaries.

Cost of purchasing such a project?

    Mark12

Do you have any idea what such a basis for a “project” would be worth, like the Arrow spitfire? I remember seeing ex-russia hurricane projects for sale for about £75K up until recently, although substantially more complete, but with out identities.

This spitfire could gleam a real identity, some useful fittings and references. Its value is probably too much for a small museum or individual to buy and restore statically. Could it’s value to a potential airworthy rebuild be in the region of £100K…?

    markings question?

It is a lovely looking seafury…..But please can someone tell me what the aircraft is marked as?

I looked at it in the static at Flying Legends, and it appears to have Canadian and dutch markings??

    Looking Good!

Your panel looks good to me.

It’s very satisfying to finally assemble the final product. Your fingers will start itching soon, however……will this panel grow into a larger cockpit, or will you start another type?
