Where did the mercury come from in this case of XM170?

According to UKserials website, the mercury contamination occurred during build – XM170 was damaged in a heavy landing. Subsequent investigation led to discovery of corrosion.

I believe only the earlier marks had fabric outer wing covering.

“Until the dash 5, the outer top wing panels and the control surfaces of the Corsair had been fabric covered. At speed, the fabric tended to deform and slow the aircraft by a few miles per hour. The F4U-5 had all fabric surfaces replaced with sheet duralumin to minimize this problem.”

    PeeDee: “?
    Dark background uses more ink?

Agreed – but to clarify my remark, I was referring to the ‘tiny text’ observation by a previous poster. However, as they can then, hopefully, get more words on a page we shoud be getting more for our money, but the ink cost possibly increases pro-rata!

Just put a voucher for Specsavers in every copy :D.

Perhaps they are cutting down on their printing ink costs – pity the magazine price doesn’t reflect that economy!

I thought it might be the one about the girl who could balance a cool six-pack of lager on her head, etc. 😀

    Interesting set of shots, Martin.

“Just a ground engine test on the other side of the airfield.”
Better do it on the ground than in the air, though!

    Thanks for posting.

“Until of course they ran out of visitors.”

Well, Kev – you may well be right, but the Filton Concorde ‘attraction’ was hardly placed in an easily accessible location for potential visitors, neither was it reasonable value for money for all-year round gawpers. In the current financial climate, the building of the proposed museum close to the Mall, to the North of the airfield, is not likely to happen.

In the meantime, why could 216 not be placed in the Mall car park? I’m sure it would generate many more visitors there – particularly from husbands/partners who have given in to their females’ desire to go shopping in that adjoining establishment. That way, the shops and the Concorde exhibit would both benefit, at least until the permanent exhibition hall can be built.
