The whitley project has alot of whitley in storage, much hard work has already been done.

Fingers crossed we could end up with two!

Is it too much to hope that it wont be too badly corroded to be restored?

    Ollie.

With all due respect would you have time to restore a cockpit section and to complete the Schneider Trophy book you were going to write?

    Regards,

Enough of the Ollie bashing already!

ill just have to see what happens when I get there. Maybe the yard owner has had so many people come round asking him for plane and other parts he’l just set his rabid alsation on me on sight.

I have some involvement with the scrap metal industry. I know that some of the larger yards like E.M.R do not allow visitors anywhere near their yards, and if you are there on business, i.e weighing in some scrap you have to have the hard hat, boots and high viz shirt or you wont get past the gate and could find yourself blacklisted.

Other smaller yards often dont seem to mind too much about health and safety and allow anyone in for a mooch! It often takes an accident like the one described to turn them into a health and safety fortress!

Are all the canberras that come out of RAF service simply scrapped?

You asked this question. Does it refer to the two Canberras mentioned here or is it a “general” question? If you meant the two mentioned in this thread then they were not RAF Canberras, they were flown by the UK’s research establishment.

I meant it as a general question for all Canberras, but you were right to correct me. I thought the research establishment was a part of the RAF.

Is the meteor still at Llanbedr, i think it was WK800? please dont say thats been turned into tins of skol!

Im trying to find out where in Stone Watsons is. When I find out ill pop along, in my oiliest overalls and take a digicamera.

If I see anything interesting ill try the old “ill give you £xx for it now and then it will be out of your yard and out of your way” line.

Or the “they are making it illegal to scrap aircraft due to the radiation so you may as well give it me” line, although im not sure that will work.

Yes, im about 20 minutes from Stone, I pass though there very regularly. On the A34, on the south side of Stone (If I remember right) theres a petrol station and garage with a HUGE aero tyre propped up against a hedge. Its been there since time and memorial. The garage owner does not know what aircraft its from but thinks its from a Lancaster, which sounds right giving the size of it. It has the “block” type tread pattern. If I get chance ill post a pic on the forum.

The JP in Longton is the one I described, Dresden is the next district along and I think I may have confused the two. Unless theres two JPs!

Watsons sounds very interesting. Is the yard owner welcoming to visitors?

How close is “ooh so close”?

Being a big fan of ‘Raspberry Ripple’ and stripey target-tug schemes in general my favourite Canberra scheme has to the combination of both,as applied to the pair of B.2’s once operated out of Llanbedr. I was disappointed that both were chopped up rather than offered for preservation when they came up for disposal-does anyone know why this was done??
    Photo from airscene.co.uk…

I spent many a summer day in Barmouth or Fairbourne, looking up at these canberras with their fantastic paint schemes. Theyve been cut up????

    That really is a shame!

Thanks for the replies. Im finding this a very informative and helpful thread.

Anyhow, yes, I purchased XN632 from RAF Chivenor when it closed for a mere £500 (including the engine)

    .

Wow a cheap JP! I bet they dont come up for that price very often! The scrap value would be far in excess of that. I live in Stoke-On-Trent. Theres an area of Stoke called Dresden (not to be confused with the other one) and ontop of a garage theres a JP parked there. I dont know the number of it, but maybe someone here is familiar with it? I have only recently moved here from Birmingham, I think when I get chance ill pop in and have a chat with the owner…. aslong as hes not too fed up of people asking about it. It sticks out a bit!

    lanky and ollie

Grow up will you, these things are not Airfix kits. It takes some serious dedication and back-breaking engineering to make a good presentable cockpit section no matter what the aircraft – in some cases it takes years.

Please, no more of the patronising posts. Ollie and I may be new to this forum, but this doesnt mean that regular users of this forum can take it in turns to snipe at us. You were new to this forum once too.

I am fully aware that a cockpit section is not something you restore in ten minutes and does indeed take lots of time, effort and money.

Yes, we have been shown a selection of cockpits that are for sale, but I for one am not going to just buy the first one I see. I need to find out more about this area before making an educated decision. Thats why im posting here to start with, for advice.

Ollie and I are aircraft enthusasts, like yourselves. Some of the members of this forum seem to treat ownership and restoration of a cockpit section as a kind of “club” that only a few are entitled to become a member of.

Ollie- theyre not airfix kits? I didnt know that, did you?
