    Back from Baku.
Whilst looking at some Petroglyphes a number of An-2 flow past – for me an amazng view to see these old aircraft still in operation (here in Switzerland we have 5 to 6 of them but they are not in commercial operation). I don’t think that these An-2 were military since they were painted only in white color. They landed at the base of Sangchal directly at the coast next to some oil-facilities.

    Interesting discussion here.

Please do not forget that the purchasing of e new aircraft here in Switzerland was always a bit of a strange process since the Swiss Air Force exists – and I think that “strange” is probably a too nice word. You have all extremes involved: The “pilot-fraction” who insists that only the fastest, biggest etc. toy for them is the one we actually need and on the other end those politicians (and citizens) who say that an air force is not needed at all.

The truth may lay somewhere in between.

Personally I have voted for the Swedish Gripen. Not that I think that there is an actual danger that somebody attacks us from the air but mainly out of sympathy towards a rather small Contry hich maintains its own capacity to manufacture such jets. Rafale and Typhoon would have been preferred by our pilots – but they seem to me to be too expensive toys and I would actually not want to buy the aircraft of neither France nor Germany after the recenty difficulties they had caused to our Country – as simple as that. The American F-35…. no option for me. If the whole western world is depending on a single fighter aircraft sold by the Americans, then we all are depending too much on the USA.

I am not an expert nor do I have the perfect solution. But I am one of those who would have to pay for the new aircraft and therefore dare to have my opinion about it.

It isn’t obvious to me at all. Care to educate me?

The obvious difference is the engne – whilst (whit one exception for testing) the Me 109 was equipped with DB, the “Buchons” which are flying today have a Merlin (and normally a four blade propeller instead of a three blade).

Germany is not “overloaded” with vintage German aircraft – but in Munich they have left an Amiot “Toucan” a French built Ju-52 in its French markings and on the info-plate its is correclty described. The same goes for the CASA 2.111 in Munich/Schleissheim – it was extensively restored… and is now in its original Spanish appearance.

…I would love to see the HA “Buchon” in its original appearance as a “Buchon” with Spanish markings etc. Why does everybody paint them in German markings – it is so obvious that this is not a Me/Bf 109.

Thanks, Trolly Aux, I have already expected something like that.
Sad. I may have to visit the carpet-museum instead then… 🙁

Google showed my a number of (probably) Mi-24…. but I fear that they are not on display for tourists…
Thanks, Trolly Aux, for asking your colleague.

Oh – thanks for that. I had originally thought that it would be “soemthing of German origin”… ok, the grandfather of this aircraft was the Klemm Kl-35.

The photos Mark posted aren’t at the Citadel, perhaps these aircraft are elsewhere or were moved to the Citadel at some point in time. The paint schemes of Mark’s examples are also different than the ones I saw.

    Correct.
These photos were taken at the “Panorama 6. October” right outside the airport.
The aircraft there were not removed from the display at the citadel but are other ones.

I had visited the inside of the museum in 2013 – but there were no aircraft to be seen. Neither the Criquet nor the Gamhouria… although I have to admit that a portion of the museum was not accessible for visitors.

Now I have been there again this week – the inside is not open for visitors but in the open exhibition outside were the above mentioned aircraft plus this one in the photo below. Would anybody know what type t is?
