Yeah but does this Delta have lots of space to put aircraft parts found on scrap dumps or even tow a trailer…Waste of time if not !
My old Austin Princess was great for that but my Granada had two main gearbox seals go whilst towing helicopters in the 1970-80s.

Recovering from awesome ” Stars of Time” event yesterday. !500 visitors in a single day was an interesting test of the museum’s ability to handle large numbers, especially when you see a Dalek at the cafe hatch asking for a coffee!
Ken Wallis an absolute star too, spending almost all day with “Little Nellie” chatting to visitors about his film role and completely unmoved by Darth Vadar’s heavy breathing .Absolute hoot !

Next week the museum is hosting a visit by the Westland team who prepared and supported the Lynx World Record 25 years ago…..

Well it looks like talk of HeliDays being dead was premature …it is still twitching ..with news of the Czech Air Force flying into the museum that weekend (23-24 July) with at least a Mil Mi-8 and possibly a Hind too.
More news when I have it.

Updating …our hangar looks strangely empty of Lynx at present ,following the departure of ZE477 to join XX910 at Yeovilton.G-LYNX is being unveiled to the Westland workforce on Friday 8th July and then returns here with the other two on 11th,all looking nice and new!
Meanwhile several others have been repositioned in readiness.

We have been having a major sort-out of spares recently and are trying to re-store in a more logical manner but the recent disposal of three spare W30 cabins meant a hurried filling of containers and we are now almost back to square one. Most of the bits are Wessex and Whirlwind and other older types so cant help with Lynx panel bits at present but will keep an eye open.

Restoration wise the Belvedere crew are wanting to move the aircraft to put the rear rotorhead back on and then are probably in a position to fit the tailplanes and begin working on restoring the main rotor blades and repainting the aircraft. However that will need another carefully planned move around in that part of the museum….still at least we don’t have to fit it though a nine foot door like IWM and the B-17 !

Just woken up from a long sleep !
The R11 was indeed at the Weston factory of the Bristol Aeroplane Company in the late 1950s when the Helicopter Division was based there.I suspect it was at Filton before that or possibly at the Banwell factory where Raoul Hafner first set up his office in 1944.
I do know the crate was “rediscovered” circa 1961 and the R11 displayed at the local carnival before it later went to the Shuttleworth Trust on loan, minus the original rotor blades which were scrapped. One of these went home with Raoul to form a bannister decoration at his house and two were salvaged by Elfan Ap Rees who took them home for safekeeping. Both were very waterlogged and full of woodworm I recall.
Later the R11 went to Torbay and the late Keith Fordyce museum on loan before eventually going to the Helicopter Museum for restoration and permanent display ,reunited with the original blades.
Throughout this period I have never heard anything about the AR111 surviving and certainly it doesnt appear to have returned to hafner ownership post war.

Well today was an opportunity to see some of the helicopters outdoors whist the chess game was played in the hangar.
I went down at lunchtime to see the Queens Flight Whirlwind being moved by a number of chiefs and few injuns ,which is usually a recipe for disaster.
However once a little bit of order was restored it seemed to be going OK.
Hopefully by tomorrow all will be in place ,ready for next month when the Lynx fleet returns !
This weekend is Fathers Day with quite a few flights booked already.Just hope the sun shines a bit.
Working up too for the Stars of Time event at the end of the month…Dr Who,James Bond etc etc …should be great fun.Was that really a Dalek I saw today in the hangar…oh yes it was!

I can’t confirm the rumours about the Anson scrapped at Weston but I do have the fabric with registration on stored and almost forgotten in my loft !
I’ll have to get it out now and check the reggie!!

Will it..wont it…The Museum has been asked to loan out the stretched Lynx 3 for Yeovilton Air Day and now we have to see if we can get it out and back in after relocating the Mi-8.Otherwise we may have to delay the move until mid July.Other smaller moves will go ahead on the 18th anyway. Expect rain that day !

Somewhere (!) I have files, reports and photos ,as well as the test pilot’s log book ..all due to go to The Helicopter Museum archive in due course. They already have a large model on display and film of it flying but need more volunteers to log in material and documentation in an orderly way.Until then it remains in storage at home.

Ah Jack…Suspect you fell into the trap of reading off a component serial number rather than the actual aircraft con. no.

My father was in the crowd when it crashed and afterwards told the story of how he went back to his office a few days later(having taken some holiday )to find a black cloth and floweres on the de.Apparently his colleagues thought he’d been killed!

As it is in the green belt you need to demonstrate exceptional circumstances, which in this case might revolve around the rarity of the collection, especially those cited as bench mark in the Aviation Heritage Register and the risks involved leaving them in the oipen air or trying to relocate them to another site.

I would also advise you lobby the local councillors. At the end of the day they are the ones who can make or break you.Trust me…I know.

The good news is that I have b/w closeups of this insignia on 138 (camo aircraft) and shots on white tail aircraft taken at Kemble in 1972/3,both as negs and on disk.
The bad news is that I have no idea how to send them!

Probably not fussed…the originals were 145hp Continental IO-300Cs.
