Two years on and the aircraft is finally being delivered ,arriving tonight. Congratulations to YAM and its team who persevered and have brought this project to a satisfactory conclusion….really well done. Look forward now to seeing it assembled and some advice on how to move a Mi-6!

Hi .There is a large scale model from Sud Aviation in The Helicopter Museum. The S-58 was used in some numbers during the Algerian War and a turbine conversion made sense at the time. Only the prototype conversions were carried out though.

Not bad work for a design that’s almost sixty….and still in production.

Good PR stunt .Harrier was only on other side of airfield!

You are so right I have first hand experience of this, we noticed a change when they stopped sending tenders to the museum thus denying us a fair crack of the whip to save something for the greater good. We don’t, that is the museums aim to make much out of the purchase other than growing the collections to save for future generations to marvel at. The only other monies we spend is on staff and maintenance of our charges, this is why we do what we do. I refer to all of the museums across the UK who are all registered charities so are bound by tight rules on cash being soent on their day to day running. I have been in this theatre of a hobby for 35 years and it still is unfair towards the people who matter the most, and thats the public. Not every one can get to the few big museums in the country and thats why museums like midland and Norfolk and Suffolk and north east and newark are so important. Each of those museums have in many cases rare and special airframes in their collection, and in many cases the big ones used to turn their noses up at those types. Well not anymore as its the smaller concerns are starting to lead the way in displaying and saving rare types, love the thread guys.

I so agree jag636. Withams are looking for £65,000 min for this a/c yet MoD sold one direct for £5,000 less than 2 years ago in similar if not better condition, then changed the rules and now only sell via this agent..

    Please don’t tempt me!

Especially as the Safir was the first international acquisition that I secured for NAM!! 😮

That said I would imagine that the F16s would be covered by the usual USAF disposal caveats etc.; but never say never!! 😮

Time to write to President Trump to knock some sense into DoD regarding disposals to foreign museums?

The survivors went down to Weston super Mare for storage and ended up being taken in lieu of debt. Two remain, both with the Helicopter Museum.

For what it’s worth I copied Ron Gellatly’s log books by hand many years ago ….The copy is now held at The Helicopter Museum. I also tried to make contact with Leo De Vigne but with no luck.

Does anyone know why MoD quietly passed the unused airframes to be scrapped instead of offering them through DSA ?After all they would have made better “man sheds/holiday lodges ” than the Lynx hulks they’ve been selling?
