Sadly, clambered all over the Predannack wrecks some time ago and nothing relevant in them. A lot of the sonar stuff was taken out for the Sea Kings but so far have been unable to find any scrapped HAS marks of those. The ones at Sultan appear to defy disposal to the likes of us….and finding boxes marked sonar among the surplus stores of A and G or other dealers seems only to turn up nuts and bolts!

The one in the Helicopter Museum is original and not looking like new! It’s already on display in the conservation hangar but awaits the installation of the main blades. It will be cleaned up a little as it has obviously been stored outdoors in California but not falsely repainted.
Meantime the Wessex 3 is nearing completion and is likely to be moved very soon so that the main rotor blades can be refitted. The blade fold gear was being cleaned up on Wednesday. The team working on this has done a superb job, only frustrated by the failure to find parts of the sonar equipment.Any ideas where to find the cable gear and avionics welcome

The QH-50D DASH , serial DS1482,arrived at last today from California and was safely unloaded in the restoration hangar. It will need to be reassembled although apart from the main rotor blades and some of the electronics it is substantially complete.
The first drone helicopter in the world to enter service, saw operations in the Vietnam War and this example is one of only two on display outside the United States.

Just to refine the comments above re Chinooks please.
Firstly the WG1 and later WG11 was an original Bristol based design ,not a Chinook ,using Up to four Gnome engines and with options for short/long cabin section. After the government showed no interest some of the key design team went to Boeing and helped develop the later Chinook variants.
Agusta did indeed have a licence for the CH-47C Chinook but assembled a lot more than 20. Many were exported…Iran,Egypt, Morocco etc…a few even to the US Army following the Iran embargo. Meanwhile the UK ordered then cancelled its Chinooks before eventually ordering again……the rest is history but if only the politicians had ordered the WG11 in the first place they would have had a helicopter with better performance than the .Chinook which might also have challenged in export sales. Finally the government could have shared on the NH90 with production at Yeovil but pulled out in favour of soldiering on with the Puma, now upgraded…Ah well!

Yes…you don’t have to be a BAPC member to go…..so long as you pay the conference fee. Some interesting subjects too.

Latest on QH-50D is that it is due into Liverpool Docks on 21st this month so should be at the museum for reassembly by beginning of October. Whilst the cost shipping it from California to the UK has been covered by a US helicopter company we have to pick up the shipping agents rip off cost of it clearing customs and being delivered to Weston. Collecting it ourselves appears to be ruled out due to the added cost quoted for them to take it out of the container and load it on a flatbed….It’s only about 500kg but you’d think it was 10 tonnes !

THM has enjoyed the best August in visitor numbers since opening 25 years ago and celebrated with the last of the month’s Open Cockpit Days by allowing visitors into the Hind cockpit….a rare treat for visitors. Sadly however our collections officer was taken from us only days previously due to a sudden heart attack. Stacie hadn’t been in post very long but previously was a volunteer with us on the front desk so her loss is widely felt. She was great with children and adults alike as all who met her can testify. A real shock.

I had my first flight in an Anson from Colerne in the 1950s with the ATC. There were Balliols there too I recall….probably got some notes in my “Eagle” Diary of the period !
Later I visited numerous times with a camera both before and after the Herks arrived and especially recall one visit when the Avro 707 was lying dismantled on the edge of the airfield ,presumably after the museum closed.
Unfortunately my photos of those times are b/w and many only negatives or on a disc….and I have no idea how to put them up on here!!
However the originator of this thread is welcome to PM me and visit to see/copy what I have if he PMs with me contact details.

Reading this thread about the Scouts suggests that the crashed aircraft also returned to the UK as it seems unlikely the one at Everetts could have been so well restored. I know it was Autair who originally bought the Uganda Scout….they had very close contact with Africa.
It was then sold I believe to a Jim Wilkie but was then moved on again.

I imagine these are some of the Army Lynx fuselages sold at the A&G auction earlier this year……the Navy airframes were auctioned too.Be interesting to know if the quantity at Watsons matches those sold….and if the serials handwritten on the noses still exist….and how much they are asking now……the hulks went for around £3000 each at the auction as I recall.
