Actually, it is possible to theoretically detect GPS signals. Any antenna that recieves a signal will retransmit a small amount of the signal out again. That’s how the TV detector vans in the UK can find people with TVs who haven’t paid their license- they detect the TV signals re-radiated from the offenders TV aerials.

So even a passively receiving antenna could theoretically be detected.

actually no, GPS reciever are that just recieved only and don’t transmitter any back signal.how GPS works when sending locating data is by you have enter your present location into the reciever itself and the GPS will always spool data from that that sats locating you have enter over and over again it’s called spooling and the reciever will filter the correct info automaticly for you as long you enter the location your going correctly..also if you did send out a GPS signal back the US reserve the right to BOMB you.they consider any interfernce with any USA commucation sat ” AS A ACT OF WAR”

But as you mention that is only apparant to an object at rest. Perhaps on board a faster than light ship you wouldn’t even notice the transition… except that time for you will cease to effect your body and mind… trapped in an eternal prison of unlife the ship would continue to fly forever… till it hit something of course… or flew through something that slowed it down or speeded it up like a deep gravity pool/field.

remember reading a science fiction short story where people were making a special type of glass that slowed down the speed of light. A guy out in the country was selling 20 year glass, which meant that it took 20 years for the light to travel completely through the sheet of glass. Such items were left standing in front of spectacular views and then after 20 years were sold to create a 24/7 moving real image for an inner city apartment that would last 20 years. The story itself revolved around some people wanting to buy this glass (which was better than most as 3-4 year glass was more common). Every once and a while the seller would look briefly back at his house to watch a woman inside moving around and would not be distracted till she left the front room area. Later they find out it is his wife who had died sometime earlier and he has memorised her routines so he can watch every move she made when she was alive… the image a ghost of a long buried person…

While I agree that USAF & LM tend to show the best part of the Raptor, I don’t think that the plane is far from what is advertised.

First, they didn’t hide the problems encountered during the development. The software integration, for once, delayed the IOC with some years. If they had tried to hide it, they would stick to the schedule.

OTOH, a plane that required 40 billion in R&D must be a revolutionary one, unless the Americans are complete morons or LM the biggest thief in the world.

Also, I don’t think that the USAF pilots are just reading add pamphlets edited by LM. You should consider that, unlike F 16 community (that enjoy a younger fleet) the mean age of F 15 is 18 years. That’s pretty old. It is just normal for any pilot to be thrilled when being among the first to fly a new plane (F 15, the last front line fighter was introduced in mid ’70)

About the IR suppression, there is a lot of folklore on the net: the “topcoat” the allegedly shift the IR radiation to a frequency that is harder to detect, the cooling of the hottest part using fuel, and so on. In fact, I believe that measures had been taken to reduce the IR signature, but probably those measures are far from what has been discussed.

Also, you should consider that even if they produced one of the best IRST in the world (the AN/AAS 42 of the F 14D) the Americans didn’t think that it could be the primary targeting device. May be they know better.

Besides, did you heard of any shooting down using an IRST, anywhere in the world?
