    Martin Baker Meteors

How about these Meteors. Technically still in service and the type flew combat missions in 1945

If the RN are planning on having the F35b why are their pilots currently training with the USN on cat and trap F18s? Surely it would have made more sense to be training with the USMC, similar type of aircraft to the F35b. Makes me think a decision to fly cat and trap has already been made.

Does anyone know details of the FAA pilot secondment to the USN that is apparantly happening at the moment? Rumours are that it is a squadron’s worth of FAA pilots. Seems unlikely but if true what aircraft are they flying and why? Could it be that there has been a plan to by Hornet’s for a while?

What colour was it? There was a Dutch F16 at RIAT over the weekend painted in “Orange Lion” colours. The Red Arrow could have been doing a photo shoot, Red 10 perhaps?

How is that remotely ridiculous? The UK is financially bankrupt. Simply we cannot afford what we do in any field right now, be it education, health or defence. The pot of money is more than just empty, we’ve even cut throught the bottom. The military can bleet all it wants, the cupboard (to use another metaphor) is bare.

As for the UK world position, it ain’t what it used to be. Not only has Neo-Arbitan bankrupted the UK financially (with not a little help from the banks) but has also bankrupted us morally. We have very little standing anywhere since 2003 when we turned our back on the diplomatic process. I have worked in three continents since then and view of the UK is one of mistrust, disbelief and downright hostility. Since our pullout (surrender as one RN officer put it to me) from Iraq our word is worth very little and we are regarded with utter distain in many quarters.

Yes we have world responsibilities, I would not advocate no power projection, but Nuclear weapons and strike carriers may no longer be the answer. I would love to live in a UK where we could afford to sustain the NHS, high quality state education and still build strike carriers etc, but it is just a dream, its not possible.

True, the UK isn’t the world player that it once was. However the UK didn’t get where it was because it was liked or trusted by other nations. It got where it was becasue it was strong. I believe that the UK has more of an influence and responsibility on the world stage that you do. We will only maintain it by being strong.

On the world stage strength carries more weight than being liked or trusted.

That total force structure doesnt exist yet

It’s not? CVFs are in service yet? I thought there were 100 JCA already in FAA service.

CVF is nothing more than a coast guard cutter?

How many other navies could put a CBG to sea including the equal off:

    CVF
    2 T45
    3-4 FSC
    Ocean
    Bulwark
    1-2 Astute
    40 JCA
    Merlin

Maybe it can have a dogfight with the RAF at 90 Hawk…:D

They would have to get someone from the army to decide who won!

Anyone else feel strongly enough about the state of military investment to write to their MP?

I would like to think that HMG has finally realised that enough is enough. Time will tell.

As an alternative to all Harrier/JSF squadrons becoming RAF they could all become Navy. Let the RAF keep Typhoons, Tonkas etc. If the UK is going to have JSF at all then desginating them all RN should be no more expensive that designating them all RAF. The CAS role can be carried out by RN pilots just as well as by RAF, perhaps more so as the RN has it’s own soilders.

    Any thoughts

My boss was chatting to an ex RAF Tornado pilot who told the story of a Tornado returning from a mission in Gulf 2 at Mach 1.1 at 250 feet. There is probably a bit of the fisherman’s tale in that but it’s a cool story!

There has been some talk of Blue Vixen sets being podded so they could be fitted to a GR7/GR9. Anyone know the truth behind that?
