Why should there be? The advertisers know that most of you (other than the odd loony who is currently camped outside Harrods or somewhere) aren’t going to rush out and buy for a few days, and if the BBC try to trounce ITV they will get lambasted for being competative, again. Christmas TV in Britain has been lame for years; there will be a few Xmas ‘specials’ from everyone and their dog, a few vehicles for soap stars who insist that they shouldn’t be pigeon-holed and that they can do Dickens justice, and the same old films. Mustn’t forget the Queens speechzzz…

Nice that someone has made your day, but a little humility would go a long way. Having managed to pin the Channel Dash slaughter to the RAF, any other statement you make would need to be thoroughly checked; but if those facts don’t matter to you, what does…?

Yes Flood, when I say 5 miles I am not talking about Italian ships in the harbour which wouldn’t fire anyway in that confined space for fear of hitting their own ships. How did the R A F do against the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in the channel dash fiasco, am I not correct in saying the attackers were slaughtered?

RAF? Ha.
Think navy Stringbags of the same type used in the Taranto raid, by the same people who had assisted in the sinking of the Bismarck and with a non-exsistant close-in cover of RAF fighters. Slaughtered: yes, but it was a brave effort put up at last moment and with poor lines of communication so that the RAF fighters and the FAA Swordfish failed to meet up where and when they most needed, and on a day when Bomber Command had been stood down because of the appalling weather (although they did get up, dropping bombs – which missed – and mines – which slowed the Germans down).

You said capital ships, low flying aircraft, getting to within 5 miles, shot down, etc.
The US navy did it. The Japanese did it – in fact they put so many US capital vessels out of action in early 1945 that it might have slowed the invasion of Japan. They had to get close to hit the target…

With a US talkshow host apparently standing up for the option to torture (according to someone on Radio 4 yesterday) with the question ‘what are we supposed to do, say please?’ I guess that if it helps the cause then its a weapon of choice. As to whether they admit to genuine naughtiness or just whatever is suggested to them, your guess is as good as mine (or maybe better, depending on your occupation…?;)).
