    While it seems like the B-58 can cruise at higher speeds than the Aardvark, the F-111 has a higher top speed at 1650 mph, which is strange.

    So were the other aircraft (Mirage IV, TSR.2, B-58) better suited for high altitude, supersonic cruise than the F-111?

    Actually, they also turned on the D-21’s engines while it was still on the M-21 and used its thrust to get to M3 more easily, which leaves me wondering why they would have still increased the M-21’s thrust.

    The YF-12 with that AIM-47 would’ve been a deadly interceptor-3000 mile range, Mach 3 cruise, and a great missile.

    Ah, that is a very good point. However, maybe it could have increased acceleration and range over the other Blackbirds.

    I might add that maximum thrust top speed of an F-18 A/C with F404-GE-400 engines is given with Mach 1.66 at US standard day (15° at SL) at 36000ft.
    That is with two AIM-9 on the wing tips and two AIM-7 on fuselage stations, both which do rarely add any real drag. So, the baseline Hornet doesn’t really make it to its top speed.

    Which is – given the small size of the airframe – quite remarkable.
    I think with 3 ETs the F-16 has quite a good range, but of course, Norway is quite huge.

    When an aircraft cruises at Mach 3, the concept of dry and afterburner does not really apply any more. The SR-71 more or less uses a ramjet, not sure about the XB-70. Anyways, the normal job of the compressor in a turbojet engine is done by the inlet, and hence the compression ratio of the afterburner increases. In normal life (M<2) the compression ratio in the afterburner is quite crappy, making the machine less efficient.

    However, even aircraft that don’t travel at Mach 3, such as the Mirage IV, Tu-144, and Concorde, have better supersonic range than the F-22.

    I understand what Schorsch is saying about the SR-71. You can look on the internet and find ranges listed from 2000 to 3500 miles and speeds from 2000 to 2400 mph. It’s very hard to find reliable numbers for the Blackbird.

    I believe that the F-22 is unique in that it’s the first fighter aircraft that can truly hold supersonic speeds for a relatively long amount of time. Before, bomber and reconnaisance aircraft, such as the Mirage IV, B-58, SR-71, etc. could accomplish this, but not a fighter aircraft.

    He didn’t say “supercruise” but “supersonic cruise”. 8000 miles at Mach 1.4 probably qualifies. 😉

    Yes. I don’t believe there is a huge difference between supercruise or a supersonic cruise. If an aircraft can travel at supersonic speeds for a long time, and is optimized for them, so what if it uses afterburner? I would call the SR-71 and XB-70 better at supersonic cruise than an F-22, even though they use afterburners.

    I would say for more than one hour would be considered “cruising” speed. One way of calculating a planes supersonic performance could be to multiply its cruising speed by its range at that speed, giving a value that takes into account both speed and range.

    Tu-144 could, it was the Russian SST.

    Yes, but I have read that it did not have nearly the range of Concorde because of its extremely thirsty engines and needed a parachute for landing-not the way most people want to fly.

    Could the Russian T-4, Tu-144, and Tu-22M cruise at supersonic speeds for a good amount of time, or were (are) they mostly limited to short term high speeds?

    I understand they haven’t matched those records, however I don’t think the Mirage IV even tried to. I have heard that it can sustain supersonic speeds for long distances and can also be refueled in flight. I also bet the TSR.2 might have been able to come close to the B-58 in sustained supersonic speed.

    As for the mention of the Mirage IV, did this aircraft have supersonic cruise capability as good as the B-58? Or was it more like the f-111 in that it could go fast, but not for very long periods?

    Interesting numbers for the T-4. I have seen the range of the XB-70 listed anywhere from 4000 to 7000 miles, does any one have an accurate number? Also, could the T-4 be flown again from Monino?
