if you decide to venture down tangmere it is a very good walk round on a sunny day, you could also visit ford airfield which is only a few miles away, goodwood is definitely worth a look but the access inside is quite restricted although you can walk round most of the outside of the perimeter- they have built up grass banks on the majority of it though to stop people getting a free view of the revival so you wont see much of the airfield- the bonus with goodwood is if the weather’s ok there will be a fair chance of seeing one of their warbirds flying, the bonus of tangmere is the museum- even if you don’t have time to go in or don’t want to pay the entry to look inside the car park has got a few interesting exhibits to look at, the drawback with ford is that depending on when you visit there may be a carboot or the ford market to upset the tranquillity

on Saturday I took a couple of images of the downs from what would have been the south west end of tangmere airfield, the first is facing towards the control tower and onto the duncton area of the downs and the second is facing the trundle/lavant down

I am no expert on aircraft parts but I do know a little bit about motor cycles and to me this resembles a motor cycle front fork assembly (depending on its exact size of course)

could this be the one I saw in the antique shop in Arundel last Sunday? I desperately wanted it but couldn’t justify the £750 price tag to my missus!

This thread has just reminded of an incident a couple of weeks ago- not really historic aviation related but it made me smile, me and my other half were on a week away- we were staying at bath and on this particular day we were driving to cheddar gorge, on the way there a c130 appeared from nowhere and flew quite low over the car, I was impressed with this (it was probably going to be the most exciting thing that I was going to see all day) and I shouted ”looks like a Hercules” to which she immediately replied “yes it was” well my missus will always come with me to air shows or aircraft museums and the like but she has never taken any real interest in any of it so I was surprised that she even knew what a Hercules was “I’m impressed” I said “ what makes you so sure it’s a Hercules” to which she replied with a really confident look on her face “because its bigger than a SPITFIRE”

Hi pete, I have measured the valves as best as I can and here are the results, all measurements are in mm
Valve A Length 123, stem dia 11, Head dia 48, Head thickness at edge 4
Valve B Length 123, stem dia 14, Head dia 45, Head thickness at edge 5
Valve C Length 125, Stem dia 11, Head dia 48, Head thickness at edge 7
Valve D Length 142, Stem dia 13, Head dia 53, Head thickness at edge 8
Valve E Length 139, Stem dia 15, Head dia 51, Head thickness at edge 6
As for the odd valve that you think is from a diesel – i do not doubt you for a second, I was led to believe that it was from an aircraft but as I have not yet amassed much knowledge on the subject I am easy prey for traders- my only gauge on buying them is basically I look for valves that are as big as or bigger than the merlin ones that I’ve got- probably foolishly it appears but i assumed that an average diesel engine would not have valves as big as a large cc aircraft engine ! however on the positive side- apart from the two original valves that I had I’ve not paid more than £1.30 for any one of them and it looks like a few may be good ones so I’m not too worried if others are not what I had hoped for. Thank you for your help and advise

It never occurred to me that the clip might have been added later but it does seem to be the best explanation so far, as you think the second valve may also be from a merlin I am going to email the Rolls Royce heritage trust to see if they will confirm one way or the other. Here are a couple of images of the piston- initially i decided not put it on here in case you told me it was from a meteor engine or something else completely as I would be a bit disappointed but – I am reasonably sure so here it is, so far the info that I think I have discovered about the markings on the bottom is :- D10952 is the part number, B3 means that this piston was number 3 on bank B (the second row of pistons on the V12, W-Ltd means it was made by Wellworthy ( I read that many of the merlin pistons were in early 1940), 6-1 is the compression ratio, 5 5it is the serial number , 3lbs 0oz 1dms is the weight . maybe you will be able to add to this or to tell me that I have got it all wrong.
