Hi Graham,
I’ve got one of those aerials (liberated from a Swiss Venom some years ago).
It is in bare metal with “Ne pas toucher” & Nicht be Ruhren stencilled on both sides. It is available if you would like it.

My guess, based on seeing similar on other multi-engined aircraft, would be for a skin doubler to protect the main skin from any ice that may form on the prop. and be thrown off.
Thanks David, that’s what I would’ve guessed at.
Are there any timings for the next leg available yet?
G-BKOU was technically based there for a while with the V.A.T., but she didn’t fly until after they’d moved to Cranfield and completed the rebuild. I first flew in her with Stan Hodgkins in early September 88, which was not long after she’d been completed. 🙂

Hi again,
Dad says thanks for the info, he’ll be looking further into the numbers provided.
One query though, for Viscount, you quote WJ626 as a Varsity but our book on serials has that as a Canberra. Should it have been WL626?

Nige
Hi,
Thanks for the info. Just waiting for Dad to get back to me on the Varsity & Valetta numbers posted.

Hi,
Sadly WF327 crashed two weeks before my fathers posting to Swinderby, so it could not have been that ‘T’ that he flew on.
Don, you have a PM.

Nige
Hi Don,
Thanks for the info and I’ve passed on your request from the PM to my father.

Just found this lovely pic of a 355th P51 apparently at SM. Also can anyone confirm that the memorial propeller is genuine and not a replica?
Hi,
The picture, I think, is actually taken at Gablingen in Germany where the 355th went after the war.
The prop. is definitely genuine, presented by the Israelis for the memorial (and not flightworthy), as is the spinner. The cowling is fibre-glass moulded from a pattern made by my father. The pattern used borrowed bits of ‘Miss Helen’ whilst that was being rebuilt many years ago. Dad also did the drawings for the memorial construction.

Nige
Hmm, didn’t the prototype fly with a Watts two-blade fixed-pitch prop?

Sky High, are you connected with the museum? If so can you pm me or contact me via e-mail at nkfreestone(at)QinetiQ(dot)com. (replace the (at) with @ and (dot) with . ).
I have some info regarding the windscreen from ZA325.
