Hello everyone, I looking for info on Squadron Leader Charles Beamish DFC for a painting for his son. I know during early WW2 he was in 23 sqn based at Wittering flying Blenheim 1F and received his DFC for “personal leadership on offensive patrols over the North Sea”.
What I really need is the all important code of any Blenheim he was known to have flown during Jan to May 1940, YP-???Any ideas how to find out!
Any help would be most appreciated!
Regards
Matt Curtis
Hi Matt, Have you tryed asking for information Here http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi
They are very helpful. I hope this helps 🙂
Cheers Rob….
You should try a website called “RAF Commands 1939-1945” which has a forum called General questions. The people there are most knowledgable.
You should be willing to give the name, date of death, and any other details to help with any research the forum members are willing to do.
Cheers, karl Kj.

Rob….
Hi just wanted to say THANKYOU 😀 to all of you for your help. I’ve passed on your comments to the family, who are very grateful and thankyou.
Fred is looking into all other leads. He sent me this e-mail today.
Mary, my wife, has researched the firm of photographers who took the picture, to discover, according to Leeds City archives, they traded between approximately 1940 and 1956 and then went out of business. There is no trace of their records.
I contacted Thomas Docherty of 72 Squadron Association who has said he will publish the photograph in their next Newsletter which, unfortunately, is not until December, to see if any of their readers recognise Mike.
Mary has tried the local Ashington Newspaper but without luck. There is a local “historical” magazine which she has contacted and the Editor says he will publish the story and photographs of both Winnie and Mike to see if that jogs any memories. The problem is there are not many people of that time left, and if their memory is as good as mine, we are in trouble . . . Please pass on my many thanks to everyone for their help and comments.
Many Thanks
Fred….
cheers rob, your all stars 🙂
The guy in the photograph is wearing the uniform of a RAF Officer carrying the rank of a Pilot Officer. Pilot Officers are not necessarily pilots – it is a rank, not a job description. He could easily have been in any of a multitude of jobs within the RAF.
No way that guy was a Warrant Officer of any kind.
Of course, this may be someone in “fancy dress”?
Interesting to note that Pilots are (or maybe were) employed in the “General Duties” branch, rather than a specific trade.
Yes I think we’ve worked that out now, The family member who sent me this did not know anything about the R.A.F Ranks and some esle said he was a W/O, and no it’s not someone in Fancy dress, and I think you should show a little respect don’t you ? this man died fighting for his country.

[QUOTE=Dave Homewood], Was Bunny the nurse??
Hi Dave yes Bunny was the nurse the lady he was going to marry before he was killed in August.
Rob….
Hi to All, many thanks for all your help on this. I just been told that “Mike” was due to get married to a Nurse working at Ashington Hospital Northumberland, can some tell me what airfields were in that area apart from Acklington, also how far there are apart ?
cheers
rob…….
Hi Steve, thanks for that, I’ve e-mail the family with what you said, I know it’s hard just working from a picture & a name “Mike” but thanks 😀 to all of you for your help on this matter.
cheers Rob……
Hi Whalebone, many thanks for your help sorry about the late delay just finished work 🙁 I will pass the details on to the family and let you know how I get on.
Thanks again Rob….
Hi Whalebone, I’ve recieved a reply from the family,
Dear Rob,
Thank you for your message, and to the other people for their help.
He may be correct, certainly 46 Squadron was at RAF Acklington in 1940, but there are bits which don’t tie in :
Michael Mee was obviously a Flier — a Flying Officer, whereas, from the photograph, “our Mike” appears to be a Pilot Officer, without “Wings” and with spectacles.
Michael Mee came from Surrey, whereas we believe “our Mike” came from Yorkshire.
Michael Mee was killed early June 1940, whereas “our Mike” died, we believe, sometime after the end of August.
Once again, we want to thank you for the trouble you are going to on our behalf — it is much appreciated.
Best wishes.
Fred D.
It’s not looking good, but thanks for your Help.
Cheers
Rob…….
Gentle bump as this fell ‘off the end’ rather quickly, any other helpers ?
Hi Whalebone, many thanks for your help sorry about the late delay just finished work 🙁 I will pass the details on to the family and let you know how I get on.
Thanks again Rob….
Is there any significance to the script under the picture? Seems to read “Leeds” or “Leech” and “Bacon || Sway/Taylor”?
I’m not sure, This is the e-mail I recieved with the picture.

Subject: WO “Mike”
Dear Sir,
As part of my research into our family history I wonder if you can help in identifying the gentleman in the photograph attached. All we know is the he appears to be a Warrant Officer called Mike, and came from Yorkshire, probably the Leeds area. I believe he was stationed at RAF Acklington during the first half of 1940, probably with 152 Squadron.
Any help you can give on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
and the second reply:
Thank you for your prompt reply.
It is very interesting you say “Mike” was a Pilot Officer; but shouldn’t he have been wearing “Wings” on his uniform if he was a pilot, and he is wearing spectacles, is that not unusual for a pilot?
The reason I believe he was in 152 Squadron is that he was almost certainly stationed at RAF Acklington in the first half of 1940 (the Squadron was there then, was it not?) when he became friendly with my wife’s late mother, then called Winnie Stuart. The story in our family is that “Mike” was killed in action shortly after leaving Acklington. The only other information I have is, as I said earlier, we believe he came originally from Yorkshire. We do not know his surname. I am sorry but that is the only photograph we have of him. Not much to go on, I am afraid . . .
I am very grateful for your help in this matter.
Cheers
Rob…..
Hi, I’m looking for further service history of P/O Roger Miller I know he served with 152(Hyderabad)F.Sqn from Dec 1940 until 22/10/41.Any help would be very welcome.
Thankyou
Rob……
I’m not getting far with this One  Maybe a picture of the Man him self might help ?
East Kirby control tower is very spooky indeed, had a very scary atmosphere, i was with my little brother at the time and we both knew something wasn’t right, very nice in there but we were both desperate to look round and get out!
Thanks for that I think you’ve got the wrong Thread.
Cheers
