Serbia should consider Pak-fa. just cut the order in half to make it affordable
PAK-FA won’t be ready for export until 2020 probably. Their Mig-21s will expire well before then, leaving only 3 Mig-29s, not enough even for just air policing. However if the Su-30 is acquired as mentioned in the article above, then the PAK-FA might still be obtained sometime in the future. Actually I’m surprised they are evaluating the Su-30 instead of the Mig-35. Also I wonder if by F-18 they mean the C or E model. And I remember reading somewhere that the Gripen was out of the picture as Sweden was refusing to sell it to Serbia. And last time they mentioned Rafale and I never heard anything about it being taken out of the running. All the info coming out is very contradictory, don’t know what to believe until it actually happens…
I’m always amused by how whenever there is a discussion about the serbian airforce a bunch of self-proclaimed “experts” chime in about how serbia has no money, they intend to do away with the AF and let someone else police their airspace, they intend to purchase some ancient relic like the F-4, etc. You people obviously have NO idea what you’re talking about, so instead of wasting this forum’s bandwidth maybe you should just listen to those of us in the know.
The fact is that serbia has lots of money, it is privatizing an enormous number of military bases and infrastructure it doesn’t need and the money from these sales will go to fund procurement of new equipment for the next several years. The plan is that a new multirole 5th generation fighter will be entering service sometime in the 2014-2016 timeframe. Likely choices are the Eurofighter (source), the Super Hornet, the Rafale, and the PAK-FA. Other planes that were previously considered (F-16, Mig-35, and Su-30) are no longer in the running as they are just not advanced enough, and the Gripen is no longer an option as Sweden wanted Serbia to make certain political concessions. The choice will be made not just based on the characteristics of the planes themselves but also on what economic incentives the manufacturers may provide. The european consortium has promised to fund development of an advanced G-4 derivative if serbia goes the eurofighter route. Russia has made promises too although the nature of these has not been revealed publicly, because it is a reward for secrets given to Russia from the downed F-117. And China is aggressively marketing its own planes to serbia, and although a chinese plane purchase is unlikely, it will still encourage the Russians, Europeans, and Americans to sweeten their own deals. In addition, there is a plan for a radical upgrade to the J-22, including a glass cockpit, a much more powerful engine giving it a top speed of around mach 1.4 and a much greater payload, and also a multipurpose radar which will make it BVR-capable. This upgrade is logical given that the J-22 airframes are relatively new (the newest one was only built in 1992) and fairly low mileage. Finally, a new UAV recently flew, although it will not be put into production (not good enough), experience gleaned from building it will be used to build another one, and one of serbia’s intentions is to have the largest uav fleet in the region including armed uavs.
It was called an “all-Yugoslav program” but the design work was done by VTI in Belgrade and most of the funding for it came from Serbia as the other republics in Yugoslavia didn’t support the program.
Sadly I don’t see France funding a project like that. It would be more likely that funding could come from some third world oil-rich countries who may be looking for more modern jets, like Algeria and Iraq, but even that is just wishful thinking at this point.
Forget it they’re not gonna get F-16s, they already have a 3rd gen plane (Mig-29A). The requirement is to get a 4th gen fighter.
Not trying to be rude, but why does Serbia need modern fighters for? Who are they going to fight with them?
As their last war experience should have taught them, for such a small country surrounded by so many bigger, richer and more powerful ones, it really matters very little what their air force is flying. Had the Serbs had a squadron of F22s, I would dare say the overall outcome of the war would still have been the same.
With that in mind, I think they should either give up on operating fast jets altogether and just use armed trainers for air policing duties, or get the cheapest (to buy and run) option.
The top speed of a modern passenger jet is around Mach 0.8-0.9. That’s faster than almost any jet trainer. So a real supersonic fighter with BVR capability is required for air policing duties.
Actually the article also states that the S-300 might be considered.
Watching all these M70 and news i think theres a lot of contribution by the serbs on Colonel’s side:p
Nope, Gaddafi was a close ally of Tito and bought lots of weapons from the former Yugoslavia. I don’t think there has ever been any weapons sales from Serbia to Libya.
Didn’t Poland deploy minesweepers? I wouldn’t be surprised if they have deployed spec-ops too (weren’t some PZLs spotted flying towards Libya a few days back?).
I don’t see albania and croatia contributing…
Ability to coordinate, act as “controller” or “manager” of UAV’s/UCAV’s
You mean the pilot will control the uav/ucav, or the plane itself will control them with AI?
Meh…the flight of 20 year old technology isn’t all that impressive 😉
“20 yr technology” what a troll 😡
Aren’t canards a 4th gen characteristic because they’re incompatible with stealth?
But… can it do the cobra???
I’m gonna photoshop it with my country’s colors! 😮
But shape isn’t the only thing that determines stealthiness. Maybe it will employ other measures to compensate for the less stealthy shape, such as plasma stealth, or some advanced form of active radar cancellation (don’t some russian planes already have it?).
I saw that too. Any idea on the type? Seems like it would be a waste of money given the lack of defense they’re fighting against. Just drop another bomb.
Russia does have a surplus of aging weapons which they intend to replace soon, better to use them than to let them go to waste.
Russians claim the wreckage the Georgians claim is a plane is actually a satellite which crashed there several months ago.
