I think I recall someone mentioning a plan for the Balkan countries to establish a common pilot training program if they all enter Nato.

The Serbian airforce chief and the Russian ambassador specifically stated that they want to increase cooperation in the military sector. Just because they join PfP or even Nato or EU doesn’t mean they can’t buy Russian equipment. Look at Greece, they bought S-300 or Tor M1 or something recently from Russia. Czechs bought the Mi-35 last year and Croatia just bought some Mi-17’s. Besides, Serbia doesn’t want to join Nato, only PfP and EU.

The PAK-FA is supposed to make its maiden flight in the next year or two, and enter service with the RuAF in about 2012.

Serbia has several airforce-related projects going on, but I haven’t heard anything abotu any of them in a while. These include:
    -Modernizing the G-4’s
-New basic prop trainer, the Lasta, to replace the Utva 75
    -A new UAV called IBL-2004
-Some new PGM’s, including GROM-B (TV-guided missile) and LVB-250F (laser guided bomb)
-Modernization of SA-3 and SA-6 missiles

No idea which if any of these projects is still on the agenda.

    Summary:

-Deal for overhaul of Mig-29’s was finally signed between the airforce and MIG. The work will be done in Russia by MIG.
-4 Mig-29’s will be overhauled before the end of 2007 and 1 in 2008.
-Cost for overhaul of the 4 Migs is 24 million USD. For that price I think there will be some modernization too not only overhaul, but the article doesn’t say that.
-They said this is the first investment into the Serbian airforce in 20 years.
-The government decided that control of our skies must be done by our own aircraft no matter what the cost.
-8 helicopters and 1 transport plane will also be overhauled, no more details.
-Due to much greater quantities of fuel, Serbian pilots this year flew 5 times as much as last year.
-No new aircraft will be bought until at least 2010. No word on what happens after.
-Russian ambassador stated that ties between Serbia and Russia are as strong as ever, and expects cooperation between the two countries to increase (Hmmm, PAK-FA?).

Kroejsha has been saying it will buy new aircraft for ten years.

Here’s an article from 1999 saying they bought 12 F-16’s from the US and they were to be modernized by Israel: http://www.f-16.net/news_article176.html

They say they will buy something, then they say they’re not buying, then again they’re buying… Only a few months ago there as an article about how Croatia decided to abandon their fast jet fleet and use only helicopters. Now they want planes again? Tomorrow they’ll probably change their mind again. They don’t even know themselves what they want. I’ll believe it when I see it.

at that moment, an fully indoctrinated army filled with Serbian extreme nationalism, not resembling anything that “older” JNA was, rather an direct opposite.

You have to be kidding. JNA in 1990 was still filled with non-Serb officers. Chief of airforce at that time (Anton Tus) was Croat. Half the soldiers fighting for JNA at that time were probably Macedonians, Muslims, and Albanians.

How about the Viggen? It’s still fairly modern and can use the AIM-120.

On June, 1953 at Batajnica airport landed a group of eight Thunderjets flown over from a base in West Germany.

Are you sure that was the first jet Yugoslavia flew? I think the indigenously-designed Ikarus 451M flew before Yugoslavia received any American jets.

The hardest language in Europe to learn is Basque.

I can read the Russian alphabet and I’ve got the grammar down pat, only my vocabulary is not that big. In general I find that Russians can understand me pretty well when I try to speak it, but I find it harder to understand them.

First generation AAMs — Rear aspect only IR AAMs, pure Semi Active Radar guided for BVRAAMs. Started from the late fifties to early sixties. Examples. Early AIM-9 and AIM-7.

I would call those 2nd gen, and 1st gen would be very simple beam-riding missiles or unguided AAM’s like the Mighty Mouse.

The Austrians need those Typhoons because we Serbs still aren’t done stiring up trouble in the region. Any lesser plane is just not good enough to defend against our Super Galebs.

Am I correct in assuming that active radar cancellation, like what is found on the Rafale and Eurofighter, would not work against the F-22’s radar because it sends each pulse at a different frequence so there is no way to cancel radar waves if you cannot predict what frequency they are emitted at?

I wonder how many more years until radars become obsolete and are replaced by some new type of technology.

So, correct me if I’m wrong it’s possible to track, lock and launch a missile in passive mode? (no radar illuminating by A/C)? Or does the missile need guidance (from the A/C radar) untill the last fase where the missile’s radar take over. Or is it also possible to use data link with the missile and not use the radar at all?

    regards

    Joris

Yes, with the F-22/AIM-120D combo, the missile can be launched and guided to its target with the F-22’s LPI radar which cannot be detected (at least not by any RWR I’m aware of), and the target does not even know he has a missile coming at him until the missile is in its terminal stage, but then he only has a few seconds until it hits so he hasn’t got time to do anything but eject. That’s why the F-22 can defeat any current fighter in BVR, although I am not sure how it would fare against aircraft with EXTREMELY powerful radars, like the Mig-31, which might be able to detect the F-22 at a sufficient distance to launch its own missile.

Isn’t the F-22’s LPI radar passive in the sense that it cannot be detected by RWR? Are there any RWRs that can detect LPI radars?

Well the Viggen uses a delta-canard layout which is far more advanced than the F-4 (which was designed in the late 50’s). The Gripen also uses the delta-canard configuration so what exactly is its advantage? It’s definitely not the airframe configuration… The only thing I can think of is that the Gripen probably uses more composites in the airframe.

Why didn’t they just put new avionics and engines in the Viggen? Is the Gripen airframe really that much of an improvement over the Viggen to justify the cost of the new design?
