Good to see that Airtron will continue. I send my best wishes in your endeavours but with a note of caution. If you intend to carry out repairs on instruments of this era, make sure you are fully licensed under the handling of radioactive materials regulations. It’s a bit of a minefield and the fines can be horrendous. Removal of the radioactive paint is very tightly controlled as is it’s disposal. Don’t fall foul of the radioactive police mate!

I couldn’t agree more with bravoalpha.
I work for an aircraft instrument repair company (30 years now, ouch) and once the glass comes off a lumious dial BE VERY CAREFUL. (in fact DON’T even take it off get the unit disposed of properly and start afresh)

Although we used to do it many many years ago we don’t anymore under any circumstances, however I’m sure we could undertake the repairs of non luminous instruments though. PM me if you like and I’ll pass on your details to ‘the powers that be’.

    what about individual airframe histories?

The Air Britain books do that (and more) but for more details there are the 2 volumes by Arthur Pearcy published by Aston, ” Douglas DC3 Survivors” but of course these will only give the history upto 1988 when they were published.

Then theres the booklet by The Aviation Hobby Shop British Dakotas (1984),which although not overly detailed does contain some nice photos.

You probably couldn’t do any better than the two volume set from Air Britain.
DC1, DC2,DC3 The First seventy years. A bit pricey perhaps but loads of info and photos. Nearly 750 pages altogether.

Which is the reason that one of my cats is called Mr Warwick 😀

At feeding time every day I have the opportunity to quote the movie.

    Moggy

Great name for puss, Don’t know if anyone knows but one of Robert Rudhalls four cats was called Skipper…. for obvious reasons.

Sorry Tony! I think there should be a plaque in the ground at Duxford where they stood….. Anyone know where? (I’ll give you within 6”) and no, I don’t know.

What about using the one where they have to fire a flare to stop the new recruit from landing with his wheels up……….?

Answers on postcard. (without watching the film again)

My Dads favourie quote was always; ….

”Don’t you yell at me MR Warwick…..”

Still has a affect on me now after all these years.

And he also liked, ”you can teach monkeys to fly better than that….”

I was also lucky enough to have one of Roberts books dedicated to my son.

    Military Moths

Have looked in my copy of Stuart McKays book DH.60 Moth and there are quite a few B&W pictures of not just RAF DH.60s but RAAF and Swedish too.

They all basically appear overall silver with the fin flash on the entire rudder although one picture shows a Moth of the Upavon station flight (K-1206) as having a painted top wing probably in red or blue? Might be worth you picking up a copy or contacting Stuart via the Moth Club.

Speaking to Tom only last weekend and he said they tried to get the markings as accurate as possible.

I’m curious about one thing though. Is it the type of film used back then because the code letters look sky on the original and yet they’re Medium Sea Grey on the aircraft now? Its also interesting to note how the red and blue on the roundel and fin flash seems to have been reversed.

Anyway whatever it is she looks absolutely wonderful now and everyone involved should be very proud of themselves.
