Wishing you all a safe and successful journey!!
Any idea of the ETA at Duxford?
Indeed what a day!
My Dad passed away a while ago and it would have been so good to have shared it with him. As I’m sure we all are, he was a great fan of the BBMF.
But just seeing the faces and hearing the applause of everyone else around me just brought a lump to my throat.
Congratulations to everyone involved and heres to the next 50 years!
Glasgow UAS Chippie colours
From the few references I have I think the colours should be black and yellow.

Hope this helps.
I was lucky enough to meet Alex back in April last year at Michael Turners exhibition at Halton. I had just finished a commision of the Mew Gull for Michael and showed it to Alex to get his approval before passing it on.
I found him most genial and very complimental and was also able to ask him to sign my copy of Flight of the Mew Gull which he did most willingly.
Abook which I can reccommend anyone to read.
May I take this opportunity to reiterate all the comments posted on here so far (I’m sure there will be many more) and to pass on my condolences to Alex’s family and friends.
I work for a company that could repair and certify your unit for you. If you’d like to PM me I’ll send you our company details. I think we’ve even got some brand new ones around somewhere still in the original packing etc.
I’ve still got it on tape if you want to borrow/copy it? Send a PM if you do.
Anyone else notice the theme from Jurassic Park being played in the background during the take off sequence?…………appropriate or just a tad sarcastic….?
Oh gawd! I wish I’d never asked the original question now! I only wanted to visit the silos.
Amazing how these things go off at a tangent. Ho hum.
There is still part of the runway left albeit only as a reminder it was once an airfield (with the longest runway in Europe).
Its about 100 feet square and is at (what was) the intesection of the main runway and taxiway. In fact just about where the old FIAT enclosure used to be.
As far as I know the last aviation movement was in March 1993 when a Starlifter took the last cruise missile home.
Ironically, according to the book Common Ground not only did the peace women try to prevent the missles arriving, they even tried to stop the Starlifter from leaving too…..by lying down on the runway!
A bit of useless information too, the then base commander had an annual budget for fence repairs of £750,000.
If you need further reading I can reccommend David Fairhalls book Common Ground and John Kippins Cold War Pastoral. Both available from Amazon.
You can also get a good idea of the airfield layout on Google earth. The photo seems to have been taken about 5 years ago as the runways aren’t there but the vegetation hasn’t grown yet.
Mmm, maybe not then if they’re in that condition.
A few years ago they were going to open up the tower too as a visitor centre but this all fell through due to the fear of vandals (probably the same ones that trashed the silos) and lack of funds.
I was going to loan them (the council) all my Greenham airshow photos, brochures and posters etc for a special display too. Ho hum……
Its only after reading David Fairhalls new book ‘Common Ground’ thats re kindled my interest. I’ve always been interested in anything Greenham.
Thanks for your input anyway.
Thanks for that Mark12, it ties in nicely with something the council guy said plus a couple of PM’s on here too.
I think I’ll leave well alone.
Pity as they’d make a good tourist attraction.
Glad to be of help. Don’t forget to tell James the cheques in the post……!
It worked for me!
I posted exactly the same question on the Historic forum on 22nd August and got a great reply from James Knightly with everything I could possibly want (check out my post from there and there is a link from James on it.)
I’m sure he won’t mind me refering you to it.
Mind you, once I’d built it all, you can see VERY little anyway, unless of course you’re thinking of opening up the door!
Anyway hope this helps.
Definately worth the 300 mile round trip.
Congratulations to all concerned.
Great to see all the UK PRXIX’s together for the photo shoot. Anyone know what happened to the Rolls Royce one though?. The gear went down for landing and was never seen again.(at least I didn’t).
Roll on next year with the new colours!
Really looking forward to the event again this year. Hope the weathers kind to us. Any idea of approx times for the flying yet? Thanks.
