Just as a matter of interest, Blue Diamond has sent me another rude PM – but has turned off his capacity to accept PMs himself, therefore denying the right to reply.

As we have said earlier, a cowardly attack.

In the little world of recording the history of a single RAF Squadron, I chose my own way of making a contribution. I don’t make much mention of it or why. I respect the demonstrably worthwhile work of professional and amateur alike, whether they make a living at it or not. The deeper and more composed their contributions, the more I respect them.

As for the presence of Messrs Saunders and Sarkar on these forums, it is hardly surprising that both men turned up here. Or Blue Diamond for that matter. But the unavoidable implication of his position is that no published author or collector ought to be posting here. It’s a nonsense to suggest so. This is not an amateur, private board: like it or not, it is the public face of a major Aviation publishing house and its readers, with a lively, valid interest in the whole gamut of aviation history – and at every possible level of expertise from school-child upwards.

If knowledgeable posters working in the field may not post here in good faith, what then? Blue Diamond cannot have it both ways. Note: it is the position as put that is nonsensical. As usual, I make no personal remark about the character, origins or beliefs of the poster of it, which are irrelevant.

On the other hand, sniping, baiting, spite, headkicking, and cyber-bullies are just barely worth the time it takes to give them a brief and terse dismissal. Repeat performances are worth even less: at that point, the Ignore function can rapidly become of commendable utility.

However, there is always room for constructive engagement, even late in the piece. On that note, there’s still a possible entry point, and not too far from Bader: what is Blue Diamond’s thinking behind, eg, his username and quoting the 92 Squadron motto in his signature? Would he (perhaps after a deep deep breath), care to share the connection? He may have done so elsewhere, in which case my apologies for missing it

There may be some who do not know of this Squadron’s history. Reportedly the first “up” on Battle Of Britain Day.

Well said Don, common sense prevails.

    Yawn, yawn, yawn!

i think the lady doth protest too much.

How extremely rude, old chap. As I have said before, the facts (clearly) speak for themselves. And, by the way, you do some voluntary preservation work, great. But you clearly have a dog to feed through earning brass; I don’t have a dog but I feed my kids through writing and publishing. What on earth is the problem?

In the world of heritage transport preservation I do just that, work for free and no expense account. Doesn’t make me a saint, nor better than anyone else, but does maybe explain my opinion regarding those who make a living out of selling relics as to opposed to conserving/restoring them.

Now there, Ian whoever you are, I have you. I do not, and never have, made a living ‘out of selling relics’. So, as I said in my PM, get your facts right. I am an author, publisher, lecturer and consultant. End of. MBEs and Fellowships, to be fair, are not given to scrap dealers.

And as for being immature, er, I don’t think so; is that what name you get called these days for standing up for yourself?

As for Andy and I arguing, when two people feel so pasionately about something, given that human nature dictates that opinions will always differ, sparks will fly. There are more comments on this thread praising our approach to this debate, and what has come out of it, than mealy-mouthed whinging by people who clearly don’t understand what all this is about.

Interestingly, I note that ‘Blue Diamond’ has been on line this morning but made no response to this thread or, indeed, the PM I sent him.

Isn’t it a strange world in which we live? Take scuba diving, for example. Those who make their living as diving instructors, i.e. teaching for money, are reviled by certain sections of the diving community who seem to think there is something wrong with some making a living out of something the majority see as a hobby. When I was diving I always thought this a bizarre viewpoint, and had no qualms about paying for instruction. Perhaps we should give our books away, Snapper, and not pay the printer!

Haven’t found any on line pix, but there are pix in the Schiffer book by Franz Kurowski. Also, there is an excellent DVD about Marseille, produced by Oracle DVD Video, which includes footage of Edu Neumann and the other JG 27 vets at the rededication service in 1989. Well worth watching, I got my copy from ebay.

And anyway, I haven’t been anywhere near a dig for 10 years, not since recovering LZ996 from St Omer in 1996!

I agree with Dilip’s statement 100%. You do not say what it is that is so unethical about the Bader related excavations. I too make my living in the historic aviation field, and not just writing and researching. I am wholly unclear as to what your problem seems to be and, as Dilip says, such comments are worthless when hidden behind anonymity, Blue Diamond. They are every bit as pathetic and cowardly as an anonymous letter, in my view. Andy Saunders.

Looking on the bright side (tongue in cheek), Andy, at least this guy is generating further free publicity for us – and that is, of course, what motivates us to abandon well-paid professions to pursue our (much less well paid) passion for wartime history!

Sadly that seems to be the driving force of the main protagonists here, sod ethical excavations just count the pennies. The more this continues, the less respect I have for Messrs Sarkar and Saunders and their ilk.

So, you go to work for free, do you? Andy Saunders and Dilip Sarkar legitimately make a living as professional aviation historians – although by different means. Speaking personally, I research, write, publish. lecture and provide consultancy, and, believe you me, the profit margin is certainly not great – such are the high costs of running such an operation.

How dare you, sir, link my name to unethical work and money being a prime motivator. Such a statement merely serves to prove that you do not know me and are completely ignorant of what I am about. Indeed, if you read the thread you will see that my ‘driving force’ regarding the Casson/Bader matter was integrity.

What is extremely sad, however, is that cowards like ‘Blue Diamond’ are able to hide behind their ‘handles’ and sling mud on forums such as these. If you feel that strongly that you need to bad mouth me so publically, you should have the courage to identify yourself. The fact that you have not makes your comments worthless, and, I daresay, motivated by jealousy, which seems to be why most stones get thrown at those of us who have made our passion our lives.

Firebird ; You get my vote 😎 ……. shame that (M.T.S.J) Pattle’s unselfish endeavours often get overlooked due to his Sqdns records going ‘missing’ (burnt/whatever) during the Greek debacle.

For those who fuss & fret over ‘scores’, the glad news is most folk’s are becoming aware that J.E.J. ain’t quite the pinnacle, even if he was a good pilot. Pattle deserves top-dog status.

I don’t write books & neither would I be moved to apologise (re; above).

Personally, I’d rather hear tales related regarding ‘Joe Average’ during the war

Reminds me of a late-teenage kid (very knowlegable on W.W.II aviation), who is a member of the I.P.M.S. club that I used to frequent (B.4 moving).
He would ONLY build a/c flown by Aces… & not show any interest otherwise.

Ironic, as his Grandad’s brother was one of the top (& most famous) R.A.F pilots during W.W.II (Ging’ Lacey).

Have to agree though, Marseilles was obviously exceptional….. so this will interest all the Luftwaffe fiends :diablo: (sorry, fans), of which there are many.

You are absolutely right that tales of the unsung heroes are of greater interest, as my published record indicates. Having known Johnnie Johnson and many of his pilots well, and studied his wartime flying in great detail, I fear, however, that you do him an injustice. Forget all the rubbish about scores, Johnnie, if you knew him, had a massive personality and charisma, and was, undoubtedly, Wing Leader par excellence. Who was the greatest, and what rule of thimb is applied to decide this is, I feel, very much a personal thing. Anyway, as I have said before, this thread is not a debate about this but a message board for ‘Operation African Star’.

You certainly don’t need to apologise – the person that did so previously had got even the basic facts – like the ID of the pilot I was talking about – completely wrong, and that is why he apologised. No-one has to apologise for hhaving an opinion – even if it is wrong!

One thing, though. It is only the stories of famous pilots which attracts the interest of the popular press. Frustrating though this often is, at least they will cover stories, such as the search for Bader’s Spitfire and Marseille’s 109, which all helps keep the memory alive and in the public imagfination.

Yes thanks, I have seen the contemporary pix, and Jagerblatt etc, and as I said in the original post the aircraft clearly hit a hard desert floor, the terrain obviously being very different to Flanders! Having long been fascinated by Marseille, however, to pay respects at the Pyramid would be really something, and to sand at the crash site awesome. Steve Vizard and I are agreed, however, that there would be some fragments remaining, no matter how apparently insignificant. The fun of it all, however, is in organising the expedition, and, of course, you never know what might happen along the way. Anyway, I love Egypt and have a few other irons in the fire over there, so can’t wait to get back out there. I corresponded with Edu Neumann about Marseille and the crash site in 1996, shame he is no longer with us.

Your good wishes are both appreciated and well received.

For ‘sand’ read ‘stand’ – no pun, must be that glass of red!

Dilip. I wish you well in your search but I met Hans Ring and/or Werner Girbig in Giessen c.1976 and saw several photos they had of the crash so you may want to pursue that? I recall the mainplanes, elevators, engine and cowlings being visible and just a big burnt patch in the sand. From my notes I see that it was an Erla built machine and the number of the DB 605 A-1 was 77411. It was taken away for examination as per a previous posting. My notes from Girbig also show: “Aktenzeichen 52 Nr 270/42 – Berichte der Untersuchungskommission – “Sabotage oder ein sonstiges Verschluden von Personen hat nicht vorgelegen.” I also think that Jager-Blatt carried a feature a while back and I think there was a colour photo of the marker pyramid on the front cover. You may want to check that, too? Good luck with it. Andy (PS….tell Tim to pack his own soup. He didnt like the French stuff and I’ll bet he will complain about the North African sheeps eye potage!) :diablo: 😀

No honestly Andy! On this particular site, which I found whilst surfing around this afternoon, this chap from up north says that he saw the programme and is convinced that Schlager is his father! As you know, certain aces have attracted such claims over the years, which may or may not be true, so who knows? The way the whole Bader thing has gone over the last 11 years I wouldn’t be surprised at – or dismiss – anything!

    Cheers, Dilip

The latest twist? Does Albert Schlager’s orphaned son live in Northern England? Its true, I saw a post today on a Luftwaffe site!
