I’ve flown on the both the DC-10 (Swissair flight to Abu Dhabi in the early eighties) and I thouroughly enjoyed that experience as I was allowed to join the flight crew in the cockpit for a little while. As a young kid, I was absolutely thrilled to be up there. I have never flown on the MD-11 but I can’t see the flight being much different as both aircraft are quite similar. I do hope that I will have the chance to fly aboard an MD-11 one day but I believe those chances are dwindling. How unfortunate!
As for the Tristar, I flew on one with British Airways, again this was a flight to Abu Dhabi with a quick pit stop in Doha. What an incredible experience that was as well, as again, I was allowed to visit the cockpit.
The Tristars days as a passenger carrier seem to be numbered as very few remain in service. I believe a few are still in use in Asia with a couple of carriers. It is unfortunate as I always thought the Lockheed stablemate was a graceful queen of the skies. Fluid lines, fast and beautiful to look at from any angle.
The DC-10 has served the airline industry very well over the years and now, will remain a mainstay in the skies above the planet as a cargo jet with companies such as UPS, FedEx and others which might see it as a viable platform for their needs.
The MD-11, on the other hand, deserves to continue to serve as a passenger platform even if the aircraft didn’t deliver on all performance parameters. If KLM plans on using them for another decade, they must be happy with the work the aircraft is doing for them on specific routes.
No matter what happens, long live these classics! 🙂

Incredible that people could be that stupid to do such a thing in these times. I can’t possibly understand how someone could push themselves to do this. Obviously, neither individuals really thought this through and I do hope that they will be caught in due time, although this could be a tough case to crack. These people need to be made examples to the rest out there so they can understand that a bomb threat is something not to be jocked about.

In light of me making a few mistakes when I posted this thread, I will try to make it a little more clear for you all.
Saddam Hussein, realizing that he would loose any type of conflict against an allied invasion, would have opted to follow UN directives in an effort to see sanctions against his country eventually lifted. This of course would have happened over an extended perios of time, say around a full decade. In the mean time, another nation in the Middle East, with ambitions of power and leverage, draws attention to itself and sees the focus of the international community on it rather than its beaten up neighbour.
While the usual political wrestling takes place between the UN, the US and other involved parties, Saddam Hussein sees the perfect opportunity to rearm his country. Now some of you above have mentionned that you would have bought several advanced SAM systems and I do agree that his ground based aerial defense net would have to be updated. However, these would only get you so far and I am sure that a few jets would help. Therefore, as I have posted above, the choices are from both Russian and China. At the same time, where would you send your new pilots to be trained on their new jets. China, Indonesia, Pakistan or Russia?

In the south of France where my grandmother lives, it is customary to see Alpha Jets and Tucano trainers from Salon de Provence on a daily basis. at the same time, with Orange Caritat being just up the road (Half hour away), Mirage 2000 sightings aren’t all that uncommon.
The Securite Civile CL415s and other firefighting aircraft are seen quite regularly during the summer months while fighting forest fires throughout the south of France.
Choppers are quite a common site as well and I have seen Gazelles, Pumas and other types doing low-level flight over the countryside. However, the coolest thing I have ever seen was a pair of C-130 and another pair of C-160s doing a low-level training hop directly over the small village where I live. It was absolutely the coolest thing I had ever seen! 🙂 🙂 😎 😎

    Let’s see….

Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Pink Floyd, U2, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, System of a Down, The Deftones, Chevelle, Nine Inch Nails, Audioslave, The Police, ACDC, Pearl Jam, White Zombie….
And the list goes on and yet, I can’t recall other bands names. I’ll have to add them up when I can think of them. Cheers, Irwan 🙂
