i have looked at aperture before for editing, and i intend to play about with it next time i visit an apple store and get my hands on a mac pro now that my interest has been rekindled:D
i am unsure as to how the software would perform on my powerbook; the system can handle it im sure, but i am unsure as to performance in every day usage. i think, when i eventually make “the jump” to DSLR (and i dont know when that would be) i think i may seriously look at aperture as an “add on” to the camera. it is a very nice app and i have heard nothing but great things about it.
photoshop elements will carry me easily though my 5 megapixel period:D

RAW is wonderful! 😀
The file sizes can be something like twice the size of a maximum resolution JPEG and even more sometimes, but RAW isn’t an image format as such that you can open up in a standard program. Basically a RAW file is the information that came directly from your sensor, un-compressed and generally (unless you’ve applied changes in-camera which defeats the object somewhat) un-processed. When you open up the file in your RAW editor, basiclly the computer re-constructs the image from the RAW data as it would be before the camera compresses and converts it to a JPEG, meaning you get much more data to play with when you edit. This means when you apply changes to saturation, contrast, brightness, sharpness, etc, it’s done BEFORE conversion to JPEG, so you maintain the absolute highest quality possible for your final image, and the only thing you generally need to do to your final JPEG photo is down-size it.
Doesn’t the S2-IS have the option to shoot RAW?
Anyway… It’s 02:46am… Why on Earth am I sitting here writing stuff about cameras?! Ah I know, because I’m sad, and ever so slightly obsessed. 🙂
Paul
the S2 cannot shoot RAW, but luckily iPhoto has the power to handle RAW now, so im “future proof”:D. i use that primarily for photo storage. most of the editing is done in photoshop elements for me.
Sam
these shots are really good! i may have to pay a visit to these airports one say, you have some really interesting angles going on there.
any advice on viewing locations to visit / avoid?
Sam
holy moly! what pictures! these are amazing! really like the landing gear shot.
Sam
kenny, great shots once again. you captured that PIA really well, it is a super aircraft! the dragonair is also a special one. good job from a good day!
we got that fog beat y’all:D
Sam
wow, so sharp! really like the high flying united!
Sam
i dont have a fiscal position that would favour the purchase of a DSLR, and so have not ventured into that realm….yet!:D i currently use a canon powershot S2. its a good camera, nice big lens and high optical zoom. i have heard RAW is a good format for editing, but the files are huge! (this last bit of info gatehred from adam dowley!
Sam
cool shots! i also like the PIA. we were at manchester all day….heard a few divert over the radio! they closed the airport to clean up a “hydraulic contamination” on the runway, and as well as it being foggy, there was a few diversions! so we listened to the skies overhead. interesting to see the results of such diversions from your end!
Sam
simply wow! the clarity of the shots is amazing! SIA is my favourite!
Sam
cheers for the comments guys! a few more for your viewing pleasure:

The dragonair 747 was a real highlight.
Sam
wow adam, i am officially stunned by your stunning photos! great job on the BMI A330, and the air france….my shots of the air france came out blurry:(
great stuff from a great day!
Sam
Was your camera set to auto-white balance for the Concorde shot? If so it looks like the fog confused it a little! 🙂
Good work there, despite poor conditions. The 747 heading into the sunset’s a cracker!
Paul
thanks paul! as per the concorde shot, i was experimenting with different white balances…i thought this one (tungsten) was interesting, and kind of gave a blue sky type illusion along with fog. with automatic, the shots looked good but a bit dull.
Sam
fantastic shots as always kenny, liking the il-76 and G-TOYA!
Sam
finally a moment for me to post some photos!
taken at various locations:

i was taking a photo of a twig, honest!:D
