A story told to me the other week………by a friend from up North.”The story is that a joiner was doing some work at my house in 1999 and saw all my aircraft bits. We got chatting and he told me the story of what he described a ‘front cockpit mockup’ in an underground storage area under the car park of what would have been Handley Page premises during the war. He was doing some work in the car park putting up some security fencing and the drill would only go about 2 inches before it struck some inpenetrable concrete which were old wartime air raid shelters. The nearby site is now GEC Astholm who do lots of locomotive and train signalling stuff. He seems to know what he was on about and described what sounded like a WWII cockpit mockup. He didn’t know if it was Hampden or Halifax but he assured me it wasn’t a jet cockpit.
I phoned him a number of years ago to ask about it and he seemed genuine in what he was telling me.
I think it would be a lot of hard work and messing about to get under the car park, especially as the entrance hatch is now tarmaced over, but don’t let that stop you”It is in the car park next to Slater’s Scuba Diving Centre in Preston, on the corner of Strand Road and Watery Lane. It is in the car park of what used to be HSS tool hire, although that company left the premises a few years back. The entrance has been tarmaced over quite a few years ago, so most people won’t have a clue about it. I did speak to the woman responsible for Oyston Mill who are responsible for the property and explained what I knew about it. I just got the response ‘There isn’t a way under the floor’, basically it wasn’t in her interest to be helpful, so I gave up at that point. I didn’t need a third project to be involved with.
I could do with one of these,
Rob
Seriously, any idea what this would be fitted to?????
Just given away a `Cutty Sark` from 1958…………
Sunderland?
No.. the part I`m thinking of is in line with the red circle at the bottom of the cupola.Behind the sloping surface of the gun port in the cupola..not visible from the outside..
That second part looks like the lower flange from the gun turret cupola ,where the guns actually pass through the cupola and arc up and down.
Superb!! Many thanks John.
Used to go to a shop called `Secondfront Militaria` on Lincoln Road in Peterborough,Pete used to get the usual east german army stuff in but every now and then came up with some `gems`.It was him who put me onto all the RAF surplus being sold off in Farcet when this old chap passed on..wish I`d kept it..before the days of the internet ,I never knew what rare stuff I`d got..sacks of wiring looms with mikes for the D -type masks,a chap called Simon Lannoy had those off me nearly the next day and anotherchap Mitch Barnes from Ealing.I also found a collection of thousands of WW2 aircraft photos..beautiful and some very rare shots.Ken Ward nearly fainted when he pulled out a close-up cockpit shot of `Over-exposed` B29 that crashed on Glossop showing all the artwork on the nose,if only I knew..was a bit slow then.
Dave,Do you still keep in contact with James?Haven`t seen James for years,I used to go over his folks place in Long Sutton and we spent hours swapping stuff in his shed. When his collection got bigger he moved it into the basement of this big bric-a-brac /antiques centre in Holbeach,Went off and joined the RAF in the end, last time I saw him was at `Merlins` at East Kirkby.
That sounds like Lance Jim,think he`s a member of the Forum???
Done Wisbech Car boot a few times..there was a lad there called Jamie who used to sell stuff for(or from) K+L Aero (I think) in Holbeach. He had some quality WW2 stuff there some for as little as £5.I used to go to London Bridge Market (stall out sometimes) on a Saturday morning then catch the tube up to the military market at `The Angel`.I`m sure there was a big army surplus place I used to go to in Islington too, they had boxes and boxes of `Night Gunnery Simulation` Goggles…Happy and far cheaper days. Was this chap an older or younger guy Jim??
There was( or maybe still is )a chap selling ww2 aviation stuff in the market at Market Deeping..he seemed to get all his stock from Lance and still sold it for quite a reasonable price.
Brilliant 🙂
