From cover art to nose art.
Liberator B.VI (modified for special duties) BZ965 GR-S of No. 1586 (Polish) Flight at Brindisi in 1944.
BTW, can anyone tell what is the weapon in the emblem? Is it a bomb? a torpedo?
it`s a`Homing Acoustic torpedo` don`t they have one at Dunkeswell recovered fron the Peak District?
The Stirling is worthy of a lot of attention Cees !!!!!!!LOL.
airworthy?
Too right Cees!!! If Elliot hadn`t started….I`d be after Whitley stuff, got a soft spot for those too…and the Fairy Hendon…and Boulton Paul Overstrand. Now they would be a challenge…oops sorry..wandering from the thread abit.you can always hope though.
I think it`s always liking the `underdog` or the ` ugly duckling` and the fact the rarity of the stuff makes it a real challenge…it used to be Lancs, but I got bored with that.
I know Andy,I can`t help myself,I`m completely obsessed and consumed by Stirlings.
And another big payload and an even bigger pair, as well as four Bristols!
(Getting cleaner!)
Lovely Tangmere.
Stirling?
agree to disagree I think .
I`ve over laid that turret photo with an FN 50 cupola image,it`s a completly different shape..look at the height to width.
There`s no side glazing bar on that one Alan, and on the early Stirling FN5 there was a large bin for the gunners legs…no I`m convinced it`s Stirling..wrong profile for an FN50.
Congratulations Cees, I look forward to seeing it in the flesh one day.
Now, I’m going to highjack the thread a little so please forgive me!
On a recent visit to the IWM, I photographed this item of equipment in the Halifax nose section, just under the forward edge of the nav table. The red pipe leads to an intake or vent in the port side nose skinning.
Can anyone tell me what it is please?
Looks like an Air Milage Unit to me,I used to have one.Thought these were fitted to Lancs too..under the Navs Table.
Depending on when the photo was taken it might well be my first FN 150 mid-upper turret, as bought from a scrappy in Staffordshire for £5. It looks as though the cupola is still attached to the “dustbin” that the gunner sat in, which would confirm it as mine. It was stored at Irlam for a short while in late 1975/early 1976 because I had nowhere else to keep it.
do you have a picture of an FN 150 Alan? was the cupola totally different from an FN50?
Rare?? There are some of these at Kings Cliffe
My wifes Grandfather was a Filton working on the Brabazon………
