I`ve got the fittings to go from the Bombaimers position right back to the Flight Engineer,so I reckon thats about 19 feet long. The initial stage will be just getting the Flight deck sorted out which I`ll take round to the Cockpit Fest in the next couple of years.I have thought about possibly making the section as separate displays initially ,ie. Flightdeck,Bombaimers position,Navs,Radio op and Flight Engineer.I`ve got the Radio Operators Desk coming to mount the 1154/55 on and all the Flight Engineers panels are done apart from labelling ( BIG!!).There`s the sets of Flight Engineers control cOcks/ wheels to cast up yet which I`ll also do a set for the Stirling Project.I have all the seats for the positions apart from Pilots seats(Hopefully the Project can help me out there),so it`s basically making up the Fuselage structure now.Space would have bee an issue if it was a Home project but I`ve got an industrial unit with plenty of space now solely for the purpose of building this thing which is half the battle,I`ll be posting Progress photos this Summer so watch this space !!.

Hi Cees,Yes this is my own stuff, tying to keep this all original but I`m not sure just how far to go in restoring the bits I`m putting into the rebuild.I don`t want to restore the fittings to nthe point of them looking `new`,yet want it to look far better than this `scrappy` presentation.I`ve got alot more than this now,all the pilots auto pilot panels and stuff for the port side cockpit wall, have bits of canopy but would love an escape hatch..missed one on ebay a while back and kicking myself ever since..while it`s there GET IT is my motto from now on.I`ve got some stuff on loan to the Stirling Project and they`re making a really nice job of the stuff they`re doing at Wyton.Hopefully got some throttlebox parts coming soon and trying to get the project to knock up some seats for me whilst they`re doing their seats. Getting there slowly but surely..taken years and cost a small fortune !!

Stirling Cockpit Rebuild

Sorry for the slapdash presentation but here`s a few pics of some of the stuff I`ve gathered for my Stirling cockpit rebuild.I`m trying to keep it 100% original but the instrument panel here is a copy..the rest original.I`ve got alot more of the cockpit but can`t show it here in situ floating in thin air.As you can see alot is bent and battered from recoveries and when assembled the cockpit will comprise of many different aircraft.Still got the seats and throttlebox to sort out but they`re on their way..as is the cockpit canopy and windscreen which I have a great deal of..still looking for an original escape hatch though !!!

While we`re on about Halibags Cees,I found a crashsite of one close by thats not logged or excavated.I may not count as a Halifax survivor but surely surviving intact crash sites are getting just as scarce !!

As you guys on this forum was so helpfull with my project regarding the Canberra T4, I am back with another request…..

A friend of mine at the SAAF museum is busy restoring a turret from a Short Sunderland and want more info regarding it. He has only the Turret with nothing inside. Does anyone perhaps have some Photographs / info that can help him restoring it. There is a plate inside with the marking “FN.7” The other are unreadable.

Think I`ve got the manual for the FN7 somewhere..will have a look.

I don’t know why they always illustrate DN406 / PR-F ‘Mavis’ as being Pinkie Stark’s aircraft. (The Revell 1:32 kit does, as does another book I’ve seen and also a decal sheet). It was P/O Peter Raw DFC’s aircraft. That info came from Pinkie himself. Pinkie only flew a PR-F coded Typhoon on 6 occasions during his first 609 tour – for a total of 4 hours. (n.b., I have no record of the serials for 1st-17th February 1943, 31 flights, or 4th-7th January 1944, 7 flights. Will try and get these asap). 2 hours of which were two flights in March 1943. His logbook records:

9th March Scramble and Patrol 1 hour 25 minutes
12th March Patrol North – South Foreland 55 minutes

Having only joined the Squadron in January, it’s doubtful Pinkie would have had a ‘regular’ aircraft anyway. By April, through until June, his most ‘regular’ was PR-J. Sept – Jan it was PR-S (He flew ‘S’ on December 1st, but so did Sgt Aitken-Quack, who was shot down. Serial JP924. By the 4th, Pinkie was in PR-S again – his next flight. That’s worth a further ‘dig’ I think.) So, basically, that aircraft has the ‘tally’ of Peter Raw, and has nothing to do with Pinkie at all.

Other than the swastika drawn in next to the entry of the 12th, with the following sentence:

Attacked four Fw 190’s between Dunkirk and Mardyck
1 Fw 190 “Destroyed” No. 1 (Sgt Leslie) “damaged” one Fw 190. I was hit by 2 – 7.9 mm bullets, one in the oil tank )
And Bob Wallings diary record of:

March 12th. In an early morning raid on London a Norwegian squadron from North Weald shot down five Jerry fighters. We had a scramble, and the kites patrolled the deck, but did not go into action. On a patrol later in the morning, Flt-Sgt Stark and Sgt Leslie had a scrap with three FW190’s. Stark got a very probable Probable – when last seen the FW was upside down at 300ft diving towards the sea with flames coming out of it. Leslie managed to get one damaged. Starks aircraft was holed through the oil tank and rudder-trimming tab. Lallemand was awarded the DFC.

My copy of the Operational Records Book is for August 1942 – Feb 1943 only (Sgt Wiseman’s months with 609) so can’t record that days ORB entry i’m afraid. Yet.

Peter ‘Slosher’ Raw was one of four brothers, of which only one, Michael, survived the war, receiving the Air Force Cross in 1955. Another brother, Anthony, also won the AFC, as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross, which Peter was also awarded, and their father had previously won the Distinguished Service Cross whilst serving in the Royal Navy with the rank of Commander. Peter was killed in action over Holland as a Flight Lieutenant in 183 Squadron on 21st March 1944, while Anthony was killed with 156 Squadron, a Pathfinder unit of Bomber Command, a few months later on 11th September. Peter boxed competitively, and had joined 609 in the company of Roy Payne and Humphrey Gilbert on 30th June 1942, all of them coming from the same Operational Training Unit, and all ex-Army, Raw having been an officer. According to Roy Payne, “there are a whole load of cannon shells embedded in the grass runway at Duxford. Peter Raw was coming in to land, and when he selected Flaps the cannons started blazing. Gave him a hell of a shock. Someone had connected the wiring incorrectly.”

Further to that (and the bloody ridiculous name of the ‘author’ – did he write it in a Mae West?) – I have no record of AR213 ever having served with 609. The closest it came, in my knowledge, is Jim Earnshaw working on it when it was Ginger Lacey’s at 57 OTU (see different thread for that). I may be wrong though – Where’s Tom?!

Stumbled across this cocerning Peter Raw from years ago !! if only I`d had a computer then. I got a suitcase full of letters from a Brica brac shop in Camberwell in 1988.It was full of letters from,John,Tony,Peter and Michael Raw and a ships log from their father Frederick…very sad loss,Tangmere has them now.

Mike informs me not to call it a quarry but a gravel pit, gravel and sand was taken out, initially by hand. The airfield after it was sold was dug out to a depth of 12 feet before housing commenced. The site where the stuff was buried was indicated by some missing trees. It was besides the Miles Canteen at the beginning of Perimeter Road.I hope this makes some sense to someone as I`ve never been there, just relaying a story that I thought might be of interest from a really nice,i would say honest, and knowledgable chap. There might be many people that have studied Woodley in minute detail and know a lot more about it..just retelling a story from someone who owned the site so don`t shoot the miles messenger !! The family of William May still own the house in Sooning too.
