    From BBMF Facebook page this evening;
    “Good evening all a quick update on our Merlin issue. Today we received five serviceable reduction gearbox assemblies back from Retro, Track & Air and with their assistance all five were fitted four on the Lancaster and the other on PZ865 and as you can see the rebuild is progressing well at the moment. Look out for another update tomorrow evening. Paul B”

    I don’t want to dispute your figures without references to hand but I’m certain that US forces dropped a greater tonnage of bombs in Europe (or maybe just on Germany?) than did Bomber Command.

    Does that figure include the contribution made by the 9th Air force, all the various medium bomber units, fighter bombers etc?
    Like wise the Bomber Command figure probably doesn’t include other RAF Commands.
    As has been said; a meaningful comparison is probably impossible (But it would be good to see some confirmed figures for the 8th AF ‘heavies’).

    Glen Miller’s plane found? This headline appeared a few years ago, what was the outcome?

    Wasn’t that someone claiming to have found it and for just £20,000, they would share the location? 😮

    Is that not something of later origin that has landed on the wrecksite?

    Several wreck sites have been placed out of bounds as there is the possibility of human remains still being present.

    Is that confirmed? Because it will get moved if they are drilling.

    The project is to lay a subsea power cable. Deviations will be allowable to cover such circumstances. That is one of the points of having an ROV survey.
    If it were a drilling operation, movement of several tens of metres from the target is not unknown (we have done just that recently at another North Sea location … There was a bloody Whitley sat right in the way :)).

    . Not really, that would have been debris from the gearbox. Engines don’t shed much metal unless there is a problem

    I seem to remember that early minis had the gearbox in the sump … More or less 🙂

    Number of squadrons x 15 aircraft each, plus 10% at MU, who is going to argue that?! 🙂

    HMS Norfolk seems to have been the only cruiser bombed in Scapa, in March 1940, by a Ju-88.
