English Electric built Halifaxes were supposed to be better than the parent companies, not sure about the Rootes Group ones?
Blimey – Are those “Commando” books still being published? 😮
Several on sale in WH Smith’s in Liverpool today, nothing too aeronautical though.
Looks like HMS Tiger or Lion.
Blake? When were the two converted?
The Complete McAuslan – George MacDonald Fraser
Re HMS Belfast, if it was indeed 1963 then it’s unlikely. The ship left Singapore on 26 March 1962 for the UK where she made a final visit to Belfast and after an exercise in the Mediterranean was paid off on 24 August 1963.
Fair enough – any other suggestions?
Hi D1566,
That’s very strange, it’s well documented, I looked for a contact on the link to send a link to this thread but there seemed to be no way of contacting them!
cheers,
-John
There was an address on the home page, I have emailed the webmaster with a link to this thread, hope he responds.
The list shown seems quite well detailed, especially the earlier victories, and does add up to the 110 victories with which Lent is credited.
Cracking pictures!! – I also remember visiting the Ark and Albion (possibly also Hermes?) at Portsmouth Navy Days a few years after this.
Is that HMS Belfast in the background of the first photo?
many of you would know of Lt. Helmut Lent of ZG76, he was the 110 pilot that shot down the Sunderland that sunny day and was a well known pilot who did not survive the war. Lent was very highly decorated during the war with the knights cross oakleaves then w/swords, and then with diamonds.
Interesting that this shoot down is not listed in this site on Helmut Lent:
Some genius from Mr McCartney:
You should have seem me with the poker man
I had a honey and I bet a grand
Just in the nick of time I looked at his hand
I was talking to an Eskimo
Said he was hoping for a fall of snow
When up popped a sea lion ready to go
Chorus
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
Down to Junior’s Farm where I wanna lay low
Low life, high life, oh let’s go
Take me down to Junior’s Farm
At the Houses of Parliament
Ev’rybody’s talking ’bout the President
We all chip in for a bag of cement
Ollie Hardy should have had more sense
He bought a gee-gee and he jumped the fence
All for the sake of a couple of pence
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
Down to Junior’s Farm where I wanna lay low
Low life, high life, oh let’s go
Take me down to Junior’s Farm
Let’s go, let’s go
Down to Junior’s Farm where I wanna lay low
Low life, high life, oh let’s go
Take me down to Junior’s Farm
Everybody tag along
I took my bag into a grocer’s store
The price is higher than the time before
Old man asked me “Why is it more?”
I said “You should have seem me with the poker man
I had a honey and I bet a grand
Just in the nick of time I looked at his hand
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go

Down to Junior’s Farm where I wanna lay low
Low life, high life, oh let’s go

Everybody tag along
Take me down to Junior’s Farm
Take me back, take me back
I wanna go there…

Norwegian …… Dutch ……

Have read quite a few, just finished “American Nightfighter Aces of World War 2” which is the first one that I have found slightly dissapointing – maybe the subject is not big enough but there seems to be a lot of detail on non-night combats in it. Generally I find their books excellent though and I like the fact that you can get books on subjects as focussed as “Griffon Spitfire Aces” etc.
What about the P51 and its role as a long range bomber escort?
Indeed, covered under ‘others’ – though I was considering types which were responsible for directly delivering ordinance to occupied Europe; the P51’s role was more (though not exclusively) akin to ‘enabling’ other types to deliver that ordinance. A moot point – as is the whole question.
Most Significant to Britain is undoubtedly the Lancaster – designed, produced, operated by etc etc. Most effective in delivering ordinance to enemy territory? Lancaster again. Most effective in delivering ordinance accurately onto enemy territory? Starting to get debateable now. Most significant contribution to the liberation of Europe? Any of the above but probably the P47, Typhoon, Mosquito need adding to the question (along with a myriad of others)
