Is it possible that the convoys air escorts were detected by radar and over the years this has come to be accepted that the convoy itself was thus detected?
If a cargo vessel was to pick up a downed aircraft, surely the crew would use the cargo derricks rather than try to rig up some sort of cats cradle over the stern?
Sad news, hope that they can get things sorted out soon.
Its a shame that the lesson seems to have to be relearned many times, (as several heritage railways, amongst others, have discovered); don’t leave cash on the premesis overnight.
