Having a nosy around on hawkertempest.se, and I’m wondering if there is still Tempest relics sitting in the weeds in Poona, India, as there were in 1980 as photographed on the site. It looks like there was a relatively clean, but unidentified example, whose fate is unkown.

Was it not said at the time that the airframes that were not brought back to the UK were scrapped at the behest of the buyer to avoid any dilution of the market?

According to BBMF on Twitter a Spitfire was due to fly to Harwarden and back via a number of locations for flypasts. On the way back was due to flypast at Welshpool and Oakengates amongst others. Assume this might have flown near Wrexham ? No mention of which Spit though. Suppose it would narrow it down if it was a Mellow Merlin or a Growling Griffon ?

Thanks – Sounds like the one, it would have had to overfly Wrexham on that itinerary. it looked like a Mk IX to me.

Even East Fortune, which is one of our national museums up here, doesn’t seem that interested in the appearance of their outdoor airframes

Last time I called in there, a year or so back, they seemed to be having quite a session of cleaning – the Comet was being done by a team with access platforms etc.
