    Bf110 – Zerstorer.

    I always thought that the ‘Zerstorer’ name was a generic one for heavy two or three seat fighters (In the same manner that ‘Stuka’ applied to all dive bombers, despite only being immediately associated with the JU-87) – and applied to JU-88s, Me410 etc, (and was even used by the Luftwaffe to describe Blenheims, Defiants and Beaufighters)

    But if the raf hadn’t turned down the one offered to them in the early 70’s, we would have one. ( burnt at an RNEC Manadon family day fire fighting demo)

    I thought that was a DH Hornet – equally as lamentable of course.

    I think you are getting led up the wrong path here, the pair Andy recalls is one of two collisions over Bath (Somerset), this aircraft infact did fall into the old weigh bridge of a railway yard.

    …. I must have missed the geographical switch …. still can’t see it :confused:

    What about the long discussed rumour about the dumping of G-AGOI (and other twin engined single seater Westland types) on the Westland Aerodrome at Yeovil following some fire training. The Pergrines were used for other purposes around the factory IIRC

    My memory is getting dim, but I recall being involved in researching these incidents back in the 1970’s. Probably c.1976. I might be wrong, and I need to dig out my notes, but I seem to think that one of the Whirlwinds impacted into a railway turntable at a station or goodsyard?

    There is a mention elsewhere of Bovey Tracey being the location of the incident, (quite a long way from Lydford), however both locations had railways. There also seems to have been a third aircraft involved?

    Yep it’s true alright, have been to the sight and there are some pieces on the surface, deep detecting indicates lots of wreckage,however it would have to bee dug by hand due to the terrain.

    Are the sites war graves?

    Something small and loud (and smokey) took off from Speke about 3pm and turned sharply west (ish) towards the Wirral. Any ideas what?

    I remember reading of a claim by a Bf110 crew of having shot down a Lancaster using their rear gun, so the front turret would have been useful then, but generally they must have been just so much deadweight and drag. Didn’t Leonard Cheshire have a go at getting turrets, armour, exhaust shrouds etc removed from his Halifaxes?
