I will be very interested to see what radar goes on the S-2T, Searchwater 2000 and Cerberus mission system could fit.

or perhaps the Erieye, as that system is already installed on the FAB Embraer 135 AEW fleet 😎

if they are looking for new aircraft, with the budget they propably have available, i think secondhand F-16A/B (MLU), Mirage 2000 and gripen are the best way to go.
but if they prefer russian aircraft, there’s really not much choice rather then the MIG-29/35, as the SU-35 i think is a bit overkill for such a small nation.

    BELGIAN NAVY ORDERS THALES SENSORS

Thales Nederland has received a contract for two Seastar and Gatekeeper sensors, that are to be delivered and installed on the two multi-purpose M-class frigates of the Belgian Navy. The modernisation will take place in 2011 and 2013 in the scope of the M-frigates’ upkeep programme.

The Seastar and Gatekeeper sensors provide the vessels with the capability to detect small targets encountered during missions, and to counter frontier-running, pollution, drugs trafficking and piracy. The two new sensors will be matched with the tried-and-true SMART-S surveillance radar and the STIR weapon control radar that are on board of the M-frigates.

Based on the cooperation between the Dutch and the Belgian Navy, this contract was already an option in the contract that Thales concluded in 2008 with the Royal Netherlands Navy, and that provided for the delivery of the Seastar and Gatekeeper sensors to the two M-class frigates of the RNLN.

    Notes to editors
Seastar is a non-rotating active phased array radar for naval surface surveillance. The system automatically detects and tracks asymmetric threats and very small objects such as swimmers and periscopes in all weather conditions. Seastar can also be used for helicopter guidance.
Seastar is internationally marketed as Sea Watcher 100.

Gatekeeper is a 360° panoramic electro-optical surveillance and alerter system based on IR/TV technology. Designed to counter emerging asymmetric threats down to small boats and swimmers, Gatekeeper increases short-range situational awareness in littoral environments.

as a replacement, and as part of the deal, hiFly has sent a temporary replacement A330-243.
the aircraft, CS-TFZ, has been given temporary Belgian Air Force markings.

i have read somewhere that Israel fitted a pair of P&W F100 (or F110) engines onto an F-4E as part of the Kurnas-2000 upgrade (or the F-4ES).

there is still a chance the Rafale might book an export customer in the long run.
Belgium is concidering to replace its fleet of F-16AM/BM’s in the 2020-25 timeframe and the Rafale is concidered a favorite. but since the Rafale is not compatible with american & NATO standard weaponry (AIM-9X, JDAM,…) i think its chances are slim, its prdeceser, the Mirage III/5 & 2000 were made compatible with US weapons for some customers (Brasil, UAE, Pakistan, Belgium,…)

so if dassault would like to increase the chances of a rafale sale, they should concider this. the best exsample is the recent interest by the UAE, but they would prefer it to be equiped the boeing SLAM missile rather then the AM39.

another possible low-cost carrier based COIN aircraft could be a navalised version of Bert Rutan’s ARES.

just to justify everyone’s thoughts that it looks like the YF-23.
it does, at least on some points like engine donfiguration, forward fuselage shape,…..the canopy is more in F-35A style. but if you give the T50 a V-tail, it kinda resembles a planned production version of the Black Widow II.

yes he did, that guy is me 😀
i used a 1/144 F-23 as a basis, i never thought it could actually near the real thing. i am planning one in 1/72

    on topic:
i think it does look like the YF-23 (from the front anyway) 😀
