IMHO, i think the story of MH17 being shot down by an Su-25 is utter bull.
the Su-25 is a CAS aircraft designed for low altitude and has a cieling of 9000 meters, MH17 was flying higher then 10000 meters, so the frogfoot must have been stripped of it A2G armament. second, the Su-25 is slower then the boeing 777 (mach 0.8, compared to the 777 mach 0.89) in order to catch up to MH17, the aircraft had propably had to overheat its engines. a third factor is that the Su-25 is only armed with 2 AA-8 Aphid (R60) for self-defence (Su25 has no radar, so no BVR capability), those only have a range of about 8 kilometers, when the Russians said it was shot down at 12km range. also damage is inconsistent to the used weapon, a single AA-8 could never cause that kind of damage.
there are other factors, but thats propably already been noted.
all evidence points into the diraction of a Buk/SA-18 combo, why would Russia want to cover that up? simple, they supplied the SAM equipment to the separatists.
if they said it was shot down by a Su-27 or Mig-29, then that would be believable, but if it was an Su-25 then the pilot had to really, really lucky.
just a thought here, as the majority of the passengers were Dutch (155 passengers), could this incident blow the Ukraine conflict out of control.
there were also 5 (confirmed) Belgians on board, but from a NATO/Military standpoint, the shooting down of a civilian aircraft could be seen as an act of agression.
could this incident escalate the (already tense) situation in that region, perhaps trigger a NATO active involvement?
Royal Netherlands Navy want to buy secondhand Naval helicopters
this is due to the technical and corrosion problems with the current NH90-NFH’s, the new platform would replace the rejected delivery of the final NH90’s.
Belgian Navy’s new Patrol ship, P901 Castor, arrives at its new homeport of the Zeebrugges Naval Base.
i just read that the delivery of the F-16’s to Iraq has been put on hold.
i guess it is a logical choice, guess the US fears they will fall into the hands of ISIS (just like the equipment (Hummer’s, trucks, weapons…) they donated to the Iraqi Army).
with such advanced aircraft, it would be bad if they fell into the wrong hands.
the first thing the Iraqi’s need are more Su-25’s and CAS aircraft. the YAk-130 would be ideal if they could be delivered fast.
for a quicker sollution, there’s always the L-39ZA and Chinese Q/A-5 Fantans (maybe from Pakistan?).
some secondhand F-5E’s (From Saudi Arabia) could also be ideal for a fast-mover 🙂
the Iranian Su-30 rumor has been arround for years, and up to now its nothing more then that, a rumor.
besides, there is still an international arms embargo imposed against Iran, but there is a chance that might be lifted, just a little.
i think Russia and China are eager to sell equipment to modernise Irans largly outdated Air Force.
they really need a replacement for the F-5 and F-4D/E. the F-14, dispite being over 35 to 40 years old, is still a great fighter.
the IRIAF has recently begun upgrading them, fitting them with indigenous and Russian electronic and weapons systems.
but thats onther topic……….
is that catapult being fitted on the Liaoning Aircraft Carrier?
Boeing to demonstrate Super Hornet in Belgium this month
at the end of this month or begining of July, when the salestour in Denmark ends, Boeing will visit Florennes Air Base in Belgium to demonstrate its F/A-18E/F Super Hornet to the Belgian Air Force.
there have also been rumors in Air-Cosmos that Boeing was discussing offset deals with Belgium, including producing parts of the Super Hornet by companies in Flanders and The Walloons.
a decision on the replacement of the F-16A/B is expected to be made by the next goverment (between 2015-2018), with introduction arround 2023/25 (when the F-16’s will be taken out of service.).
Belgian NH90-TTH’s to be equiped for Fire Fighting
there is now a tender to buy bambi-buckets for Belgiums fleet of NH90-TTH’s.
up to now, 5 out of 8 helicopters (4 NFH & 4TTH) ordered have been delivered: 2 NFH versions (1 in France for training, a second arrived in Belgium earlier this month) and 3 TTH (with the third (RN-07) expected in Belgium in the beginning of June).
the last 3 of the 8 helicopters are expected to be delivered by 1Q 2015 (RN-03 (NFH) in Q3 2014, RN-04 (NFH) in Q1 2015 and RN-08 (TTH) in Q4 2014)
the first NH90-NFH to arrive in Belgium.
today, belgium recieved its second NH90-NFH, serial RN-02.
its the second NFH-version to be handed over to the Belgian Air Force, but its the first NFH to arrive at its home base, Koksijde AB.

a UK P-8 would not be a bad idea,
i built a model some tima ago as to how the P-8 would look like in RAF service (Neptune MRA.1)

to me, there is only one simple sollution to build a cheap & cost effective CAS platform:
a Turboprop variant of the A-1 Skyraider :dev2:

on second thought, it looks hautingly familiar to a model i have on my shelves 🙂

looks very similar to the Boeing X-48 RC test aircraft.
used to test the concept of a BWB (Blended Wing Body)
