I believe the GAL 28 was fitted with a single Hurculese engine, originally built by the General Aircraft Company before it was amalgamated with Blackburn to form the Blackburn & General which of course ended up as Blackburn Aeroplane and Motor company, I don’t know if it ever entered service or how many were built, Not found a photo of one either, supposed to have had a variable wing area too,
So it did exist or rather does exist though from reading the posts it is not at all apparent if this is an original airframe or one constructed of various parts, anyway nice to see tha at least one of the Finingly collection survived to ths day.
Thanks for that, it would explain the size of the development area.
To clarify the post a little for you, XH558 is an ongoing project that is proposed to last for the remaining life of the airframe and/or engines, estimate’s range from ten too perhaps fifteen years, so small fund raising ideas will pop up as time passes, the first of those mentioned is in progress and the second is a proposal currently being worked up along with others, from a number of suggestions put forward, it is hoped that these projects will help provide small amounts of additional funding for 558, No specific figure has been mentioned either here or on the website, only that ideas are welcome, as are donations large or small to the effort to keep 558 in the air, not a lot different really than any other preservation project as I see it. and worth a mention.
As long as competition members are prepared to stump up for their own medical insurance, I am sure a ‘Night With a Model’ could be a sure fire winner. :diablo:
This post gave me a moment too kick some life into that old laptop.
The correct translation of the Shadada is as follows:
THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH AND MUHAMMAD IS HIS PROPHET
Originally associated with the Wahhabi reformists in the late 18th century that allowed the current royal family to rise to power in Saudi.
The addition of the sword was made in 1902 and a number of variants of the flag have made breif appearances over the years but the official Saudi flag suprisingly was not recognised untill 1973 when it was adopted with the Shadada and single horizontal sword.
I would be very careful about anything to do with the Saudies, they can be very, VERY, tetchy about things you and I would consider common or garden everyday nonsense, The Suadi Flag or ensign actually comes in a number of forms but the original flag as applied to the Lightnings is reserved as the Royal Suadi ensign and has applied to it the’shahada’ and as such it ‘Cannot’ under Saudi law be flown or displayed by a civilian, a similar row blew up over the world cup footballs which some wag had printed with the Royal ensign complete with Shahada, a Big no no as Muslims rightly complained that this was an insult too thier religious beliefs and the Saudis took offence because it is reseverved for Royal Military use only, So if you wish to apply a Saudi ensign to a retired Lightning I suggest you do so, but in place of the Shahada you apply a single gold plam over two crossed sabers, this is considered to be a civil marking and is used a lot.
Me either, much too light, similar too K13 before fitting too the support frame. Interesting about the castor type carriage frame though, someone took a lot of time to make that frame up.
Simple case of money and logistics, if the monies there and we already know there are people who can do the work, it will get done and a Shackelton will grace our skies once again, Bae are after all a business.
From my information LM720 was lost on a raid along with 12 other Lancasters at or near Leuna on 14-15/01/45, no infomration on the crew though, Could not find anything on LM920 being lost in 1945 though, or lost at all for that matter and though I have never taken the time to count them this database contains information on I believe all 3249 lancasters lost between 1942 & 45anyway, if it turns up I’ll post it, added a few links on 61 sqd for you too look over, and one for some interesting facts and figures.

Yup, same here too, seems the site has been well and truly hijacked and is currently usless, however looking around I located a few sites with the odd pikkie or two. Guess untill they clear the fleas out of the site we will get no more information.

Odd this one should pop up, been trying to obtain pikkies and drawing of the base layout for several months now from the days when Uncle Sam was in residence, but apart from refrences too the runways layouts and the like seems there is very little around…..Unless you know different… :p
Bin there done that, TVOC crew has been regular visitors for some time now recovering parts as needs be, power went off some weeks ago, vids of the event on TVOC website, sorry to say nothing moch more can be done for 603 than reflect on her contribution to various current Vulcan projects and also on the reasons she arrived at this sad point in history, lets just hope there will be so little left of her in the end that those respo0nsible will have to pay dearly to have the remains carted away. 😡
Apparently suffered some damage too the tail door area during the recent high winds, ((pprune)) not heard anymore details though.
As 708 was flown into Duxford with the intention of her being a flying exhibit, my guess that on arrival she was in fair condition, the decision to ground her on arrival at the time was a suprise to a lot of people, but I would think cost might have played a part there, still it’s good to see the airframe is recieving attention as it was getting too look pretty tatty from years outside
