Hi, I don’t normally comment on photos, but that’s a lovely shot into the Jet2 office on that third last in the second post! 😀
It’s a Vampire…
EDIT: Sorry, I can see a larger image on my PC, but it’s no larger than the original here…
It is going to be repeated on Saturday night at 2025hrs on BBC2
A programme on the making of this documentary is on next Monday, 26th March, on BBC2 at 7.30pm.
A review of this film is available at the NY Times site
Ooops… I forgot the B24s! And the Dakotas (what sort of bomb load did they carry, I wonder?).
Agree wholeheartedly, Wessex, incredible bravery and the matter-of-fact way the survivors described their feelings prior to the raid was mind boggling.
Ah, that’s the one I was thinking about Daz, ta muchly.
And there’s the famous story of the B17 ball turret gunner (IIRC) falling out of his crashing aircraft without a parachute and surviving. Details here.
The sleeve may be a home made replacement but the video is definitely professional as it’s listed on the BFI’s database.
A quick Google gives us the DVD on Amazon with the original sleeve;
Spotted that, chuckled.
Me too, they had a half assed plan, then changed it, then changed it again, then f**ked it up altogether. Submersible driver ramming the bally thing then getting all tangled up in it? Pleeeeeese! They shouldn’t be let near the plane, it needs experts to recover it.
A copy of the crash report is on AirDisaster.com
I’ve also seen pictures of a Spitfire modified to carry a beer barrel!
Adrian posted the link to this photo in post #4;
Sadly, the second alcohol-carrying Spit thumbnail on that page doesn’t appear to work.
Lucky me, I flew on all four (not at the same time) and each – from an slf point of view – was much the same as the others, it was a plane, it had seats, I was a kid and I loved flying so they were all great. Not much help, I know, for which I apologise.
Desperately sad news.
What about trying to save that sign on the pole?
Yes, forgot to mention the long, spindly u/c they must have had!
