Zac , not sure about your “sole NZ autogyro” , another one crashed at Tauranga the other day .

I doubt very much it was an Autogiro – an Autogiro is one built by Cierva or a licensee. The aircraft that rolled over at Tauranga is more accurately described as a gyroplane, or as you say autogyro. I’ve not seen anything to suggest any other Cierva Autogiros were ever in NZ, nor Avro or Pitcairn-built machines 🙂

Haha suits me just fine! PM inbound 🙂

In the meantime I’ve found a card on eBay (see http://cgi.ebay.com/1932-Aircraft-Card-of-the-Cierva-AUTOGIRO-C-19-III_W0QQitemZ350076251250QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item51822bac72 ) depicting a Mk.III, and the upper decking colour is blue. Any other suggestions?

    Hi all!

Thanks for the shot AEROFOIL. Jusging by the rego, however, your machine isn’t the one I’m after. Roughly the same colour scheme though!

The Alexander Turnbull Library (the National Library of NZ) has a superb shot of ZK-ACL taken at Rongotai, Wellington, surrounded by a throng of admirers ;). Have just printed out a copy, will help immensely in my future model build. Still totally fazed as the the upper decking colour, though. Beautiful angle, and shows registration on the wing!

You may view the image here: http://timeframes.natlib.govt.nz/logicrouter/servlet/LogicRouter?OUTPUTXSL=object.xslt&num_result=0&sr_api=ADD_SAVED_RECORD&DIRECTIVE=getFullRec&UPDOBJ=N&Object_Layout=about_object Due to copyright I don’t think I can re-post it here.

James DK, please check your PMs!!! 😛

bazv I’m always interested to read about flying the Autogiro, any chance I could get a scan of the relevant pages from you? Sounds like I should track down a copy.

Regards the accidents (intentional plural there!) which befell NZ’s sole Autogiro, an internet auction a while back has provided extra info: Crashed Invercargill 15-01-31, rebuilt and then crashed again Wanganui 17-04-31. Shipped back to the UK in a damaged state.

Hehehehe :diablo: The “Yankee Zephyr”, as far as I know, existed solely as part of the film “The Race for the Yankee Zephyr”, made here in NZ during the early 1980s. Directed by David Hemmings, starring Ken Wahl, Donald Pleasence and
George Peppard, music by Brian May.

A great cheesy adventure flick with some terrific helicopter flying sequences, but I’m fairly sure no real C-47 was lost without trace carrying gold bullion and whisky!

The Yankee Zephyr was portrayed by a real DC-3, repainted in USAAF colours and sunk in Lake Wakitipu near Queenstown. For filming it was then raised. I saw a print of the aircraft on a local auction website claiming it was a WW2 pic!

Odd how the topic is now Sea Furies as opposed to DH.98s or P-38s :p

You said Grace Firefly and I thought “Huh?”…but when you mentioned it being run up….

Classic Wings magazine for some years ran a classified advert for a Firefly, accompanied by a pic of said aircraft being run-up at a very cloudy Dx. Issue 57 has a three-page article on the aircraft in question, resident in the USA, but fails to note the serial or then-current owner. Price at time of printing (mid 2006) was US$99k…..for a very VERY complete machine. Fuselage “buzz number” is 910.

The Canadian example being restored to fly is B.35 CF-HML, see here: http://vicair.net/projects/mosquito

Its hoped that KA114 will fly by the end of 2010. At least, I and many other enthusiasts around the world hope that!

What about the Flying Heritage/”Vulcan Warbirds” Mosquito? What’s happening there? Or have I got that confused with another?

Also we mustn’t forget the French scaled replica Mossie underway.

The RNZAF operated B(I)12s which are essentially an 8 minus the gun pod, I think.

There has been a very lively discussion on Kiwi Canberra colours – with lots of photos – at the Wings Over NZ forum. See: http://rnzaf.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Modelling&action=display&thread=9511

    Hope that helps 🙂

Oh, and if you’re really keen for a different one, why not India? Most of the surviving RNZAF fleet went there.

No Mosquito is flying anywhere in the world at present, I’d say a minimum of nine months until one flies either in New Zealand or Canada.

Flying Bulls have a very fine P-38 flying in Europe, not sure of the exact location. Austria perhaps?

Excellent! Looking forward to seeing the end result! Will be interesting to see the stbd side makrs you have planned.

As a Kiwi I’d have to go for Al Deere’s machine, or possible Colin Gray.

I was far too lazy to get photos and info together of my Fletcher Fu24 panel display, fingers crossed I’ll be better organised for next year! I’ll be there only in spirit and photos, mind you!

Looking forward to photos of all the exhibits. Did you take anything along David? I love seeing progress on the Hornet 🙂

If anyone had bits, I’d have put my money on Mk.XII 😉 Shame it’ll be on a Seafire, but at least it’ll fly again :).

Interested to hear of any other bits around…and a shot of this canopy?

It would be great, in my mind, to have even a fibreglass replica of either/both somewhere on display, if only to show how far the Spitfire evolved. I was going to ask the very same question!
