The 727 had dedicated fuel heaters, and it never suffered from this problem.

The flight is currently delayed for a half hour—– i’m sitting here waiting to see this fly, hell it’s just a 747!!! Nothing ground breaking. Unless I’m missing something?

It’s the biggest commercial plane Boeing has built? A first flight is always a worthwhile thing to see. How often does it happen? 😀

I would be very interested to see your source for the GEnx weight being 1500kg more per engine than the CF6. I’ve looked all over the web for GEnx weight and have come up empty.

I was slightly wrong, it is 1375kg, not 1500kg per engine.

    CF6-80C2B7F = 9,790lb Dry
    http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgMakeModel.nsf/0/b0…

    GEnx-1B67 = 12,822lb Dry
    http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgMakeModel.nsf/0/77…

    = 3,032lb or 1375kg

It does seem a big difference.

The GENx does weigh more than 1500kg more per engine that the equivalent CF6 fitted to the 747-400. Adding to this would be the additional weight of the cowling, wing strengthening and certification costs.

Do you think British Airways would be interested in the 747-8I if it were offered with the Trent 1000? I am sure there will be routes that the A380 will be too large, and they will only have a handful of 77Ws giving any meaningful capcity increase over the 772.

I fully expect the 747-8F to gain even more orders, when the cargo market recovers. Many of the 747-200s that have been withdrawn will never return to the skies. The 747-400F and 747-400BDSF/BCF and the 747-8F will fill the market. The 767-300F is dead, 767-300BDSF/BCF will be in high demand as 767’s end their useful passenger lives. The 777F is just too expensive to be profitable against older DC-10/MD-11’s – but they will work for the likes of FedEx who can keep them busy. Air France is trying to get rid of their current examples. In fact, I expect Air France Cargo to disappear, and AF-KLM to use Martinair as its cargo operation.

Is it the angle that the photo was taken or hasn’t it got the fan fitted?

    Rgds Cking

Edit: Ive just Googled it and it has got the fan fitted it’s just got a HUGE rear end

I did the same thing, had to do a double-take. The fan is still to be fitted, the picture is from the rear looking forward.

    GENx

I like the look of it, but will it withstand commercial service? (The cabin that is)

No, not semantics, but a legitimate point. I think it is clumsy phrasing, more than anything else. “….using grammar correctly….” perhaps.

    It was a tongue-in-cheek remark. 🙂

As CD has intimated, the benefits of having the power steering and servo brakes functioning fully would probably be outweighed by the distraction to the unwary caused by the cacophony of the engine bouncing off the rev limiter.

    Moggy

The first thing the uniniated is going to do is stop the carry, quickly. Therefore, it would be best if the ABS be functional given the capabilites of most drivers.

The advice given by the IAM above is the best course of action.

……by SOME youngsters today…… Happily I know a few who have all the conventional social graces, speak grammatically correctly with a good and varied vocabulary, don’t need a calculator to add 5 and 9 and know a great deal about the history of the world they live in. They are also kind and considerate. So we should’t tar them all with the same brush.

    Semantics, but “grammatically correctly”? :dev2:

It is better to leave the engine running so that normal people can have the luxury of the power steering and ABS.
