Manx Airlines used to have a IOM-JER service, which BA pulled as soon as they took over.
IOM is a nice airport but under exploited.
A 4x daily 737 service to LGW would do well. A 2x daily J41 service to JER would also do well. The LCY flights do well, but suffer from some odd pricing from Flybe. Some tix are good value and some are extortionate, with nothing in between. Sort out the pricing Flybe, and you’ll fill a few daily 146’s on the LCY run.
Also…a must….connections to Guernsey! As BA have pulled out and Aurigny are the most unadventorus airline ever, I think Flybe could do well flying BHD-IOM-LCY-GCI with the Dash.
My colleagues in the Guernsey office have a bad time commuting to IOM these days.
To the two visitors – I agree (so no offence) but put it this way, you aint seen the worst of the Isle of Man. I nearly died on Wed 18th Feb – I spun off the “mountain road” on ice and rolled my car, which has now been written off. When I was standing dazed at the roadside talking to the police officer, a gritter came by and sprayed me! It just sums up the “shut the stable door after the horse has bolted” attitude of the authorities here.
Easyjet from LPL is a non starter. Their flights leave too early for an IOM connection and arrive too late for the onward flight to IOM.
They do have some better times at a higher price level, but they were expensive – about £2 or £3 less than the cost of flying BA or Iberia from MAN or LGW. I didn’t think it was worth doing at such high prices.
I note the comments about booking by phone rather than online. My reaction is threefold:
1. It’s a hassle and seems a backwards step.
2. It’s expensive.
3. Much as I like airports, I like my fiance more! I don’t want to eat into valuable holiday time messing around with travelling to the airport just to get a ticket.
Frankly I much prefer BA to Easyjet. But if BA don’t find me worthy of custom (by refusing to sell me a ticket) they can get stuffed. My attitude towards them is not helped by the dreadful LGW-IOM “service” they have.
They have to realise that I am not forced to spend my cash with BA. I do have other options and I intend to avoid BA from now on. Starting with the tickets I booked this evening to Melbourne, with Emirates! I also paid off the balance of my BA American Express credit card and have cut it up!
I used to live a 5 minute walk from there!
Douglas is not a very exciting place this time of year, although it’s a bit better when the bikers are over for the TT’s.
FYI, I am a fanatical Middlesbrough supporter!
Sadly I will be in the office slaving away next Sunday.
Where did you stay in Douglas, Mark?
What do you think of the new arrangements for scanning baggage at IOM? Very tiresome in my opinion, I don’t like checking my bags in then having them given back to me.
“Jemima” is a pig of an aircraft from a passengers’ perspective. The interior by the way, is still in the old Manx Airlines colours.
IOM-MAN will be upgraded to a Dash 8-300 within the next month I believe.
I dispute the allegation that BMI fly anywhere meaningful from Manchester.
They’re quite good for LHR, but they only play the airline game at MAN.
BMI are a Heathrow-only airline, which means millions of us are unlikely to use them.
Apparently, one trick Flybe have started using is:
Some flights are one-stoppers, ie. the aircraft lands at an intermediate airport, stops for 30 mins then takes off again. I flew IOM-LCY-JER last week, and they do some similar ones too.
The whole flight has the same flight number (BE116 for IOM-JER I think).
But they levy tax twice!
Thanks GD, my participation level plummeted after my fiance moved in with me!
I will need to visit Jersey and possibly Guernsey a few more times this year, so if I manage a different routing I’ll post another report. I’m aching for a JER-GCI flight on a Tri-islander. I might try to extend my next trip into the weekend, just so I can explore the Channel Islands some more (they’re shockingly nice from what I’ve seen so far).
I’m going to Barcelona next week so will post another trip rep then.
About a year ago, I flew LIN (Linate, Milan) to MAN via LHR. The stopover at LHR was about 2 hours and the airline was BMI.
My suitcase made it to LHR fine, but somehow (?!!) missed the connection to MAN. I arrived at MAN on the last flight of the day.
I was staying at the Radisson hotel at the airport before taking a mid-morning flight on BA to IOM the next day.
I politely asked if they could put my bags on the first flight up the next morning; I was extremely irritated when they told me no, and I had to fly home with no baggage. They spent a lot of money returning it to me in IOM, just because they were too useless to put my bags on the 1st or even 2nd flight of the next day. Pathetic.
Hypocritical!
Flybe’s current in flight magazine has a half page about the UK Government’s consultations on the future of air travel.
Flybe say that thay support the ring fencing of taxes.
In other words, no mucking about with re-classifying elements of the fare as “tax” to make the fare sound lower. BA do this as well.
It’s happened to me as well –
Twice, I missed my train connection after a delayed late night arrival into MAN from IOM. They forked out £200 each time for a taxi to Hull.
Thrice, my bags disappeared only to reappear on my doorstep by courier about 12 hours later.
Not great, but in my experience they do put things right. The annoying part is a chronic lack of communication at times.
I’m afraid it’s the same with all airlines. Quite a few of them have screwed around with my baggage.
They still fly -200s?
I’d hazard a guess that the Icelandic government is being protectionist.
It seems odd that only Icelandair operate there, apart from the two loco’s mentioned.
Disregarding code shares, not even SAS fly there do they?
