RE: Virgin Red-New US low cost airline

The AA/BA deal was primarily a mega code share operation, yes.

But most pundits were calling it the prelude to a merger – sort of getting to know your partner before getting married, so to speak.

    Watch this space..

I am fairly certain the Easyjet group will move to the Airbus camp, presumably with the A319. The recent 100+ 737 order by Ryanair must have made Airbus execs choke; they were probably still a bit sore from the Singapore A340 / 777 happenings too. I think they are absolutely desparate to have a lowcost carrier in the camp and will offer very favourable terms.

What’s more, A320-family commonality makes it slightly more attractive for a big carrier (I’m suggesting Lufthansa) to make overtures.

    What do you think?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-05-02 AT 08:29 PM (GMT)]Well, when BA painted a jet in the colours of the British olympic team there was certainly more than one aircraft.

I saw at least two 757’s at LHR and travelled on one to AMS.

Some friends flew with BA from Lusaka to Gatwick last week; the route was recently downgraded from 747-400 to 777-200 and they said it was a lot more comfy. I checked britishairways.com and their site actually admits that 777’s have an extra 1 or 2 inches legroom in economy. On a long flight, that makes all the difference!

RE: What’s the SHORTS 360 like??

I used to fly on them from time to time.

They are very unpopular with passengers. I think most of the above posts said why; noisy and uncomfortable, as well as quite staggeringly ugly.

Also, they are unpressurised. My hearing was always dodgy after even a short flight.

Actually, the point about an unaccountable prosecutor being appointed is OK by me.

I thought the judiciary was supposed to be independent anyway – by which, read unaccountable.

The entire point of the ICC is that the “league of nations” is able to condemn another nation or even an individual. The prosecutor is appointed directly by those nations and is therefore their representative. Would you rather 66 nations each had a prosecutor??

They’d spend the first 5 years of any case arguing over which brand of bottled water to drink!

Don’t get me wrong, I am dead against the ICC. But it does seem that if it is going to be put in place despite my opposition (!) then the process outlined in the article is actually the most practical one. No who’s being high-minded – the practical Europeans or the democracy-crazed Americans??

These things really confuse me! I think I just use the pronuciation which comes to mind – not very consistent I’m afraid.

    How about

    “Ken-ya”

    “Keen-ya”

    “Sow-dee”

    “Sor-dee”

There is no doubt that there are lots of war criminals in the US who should be brought to justice. The CIA “hero” who dies in Afghanistan is one recent example.

But in my opinion, the ICC is little more than a mouthpiece. I do not believe in “victors justice”. I still feel that the Nuremburg trials were farcical and every similar trial ever since has also been a farce.

I have great idealogical difficulty in accepting that the legitimacy of the ICC. It’s just the winnders whacking the loser. Not very sporting and frankly, conduct unbecoming of gentlemen.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-05-02 AT 08:49 PM (GMT)]Although I have to disagree about the wine. I went to a vineyard in Franschoek, and it really was disgusting! Then again, I also like to drink Guinness and the worst pint I ever had was at the Guinness brewery in Dublin. Strange phenomenon. I will say that Franschoek is a brilliant place though – actually nicer than Stellenbosch I thought.

It is cheap though, isn’t it! I paid about GBP 40 for a rtn flight from JNB to CPT with South African. 2 hours each way on a 737-800. Easyjet and Ryanair, eat your heart out!!!

Oh – Tanzania – never been there unfortunately, but I have heard that you can hire a whole carriage of the train and travel from Lusaka to either Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjiro. Seems like an excellent was to see the “real” Africa. Can I ask a question?

    How do you pronouce Tanzania??

    I always say “Tan-zan-ear”

    But some people say “Tan-zane-ear”

RE: What Languages do you speak?

I’m ashamed to say – I only speak English. About the only formal language education I received at school was 1 hour a week for 50 weeks, between 14 and 16. That was French, and all I remember was that we had to study the theory – double reflexive verbs and all that, but no practical speaking.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-05-02 AT 06:16 PM (GMT)]Hyena were cool.

At night time, we could track Hyena and follow them to a kill. We saw one and followed it one night…and found a leopard in a tree, perusing a freshly killed Kudu. Absolutely jaw dropping stuff!

Zambia is really hard to get to, you’re right. It is VERY expensive, too. My old man took us all to a camp in the South Luangwa park about 8 months ago and it cost about USD 12,000 for 5 days. That was one of the more affordable camps. I dread to think what the more expensive ones would cost. In a way though, it is good that it cost so much. It means that when you can afford to go, it is not crowded and believe me, it is worth every penny. You are given your own guide (he was a young English guy actually!) and your own driver/rifleman who is usually a local.

Some friends of my parents own a half share in a private game park on the edge of the Kruger. Sadly, it was on the banks of the Limpopo, and got flooded during the Mozambique floods! But you’re right, everything is so cheap in SA (unless they price it up in USD!!). I’m still thinking about buying a condo in Cape Town (I went there at Christmas to check it out). People who can only afford a small 1 bedroom flat in the UK (ie. me!!) can also afford very luxurious condos in the sun, by the beach. Very tempting.

Oh – if you ever do take a safari in the South Luangwa, it is actually a lot cheaper to start in Malawi and cross the border than it is to go direct to Zambia.

    Magical, Geforce.

Outside of my fiancee’s arms, I have never felt so alive and so happy as when I’ve been in the African bush. Driving along the track…and some elephants decide to cross the road!

What do you think is the best place for safari?

I’ve only been to parks in Zimbabwe and Zambia, though I may have stumbled across the border into Malawi a few times! The Kruger is world famous and is also conveniently near to Jo’burg, whereas some of the others are horrendous to get to – a case of hiring a light aircraft and paying someone to fly you out to an airstrip.

Did you ever get any pretensions of jacking in your European living and re-training as a safari guide – something I’d love to try out!
