RE: Boeing to enter regional market…..

I have to put my hands up and admit I don’t know the operating charateristics of the 328 and 728.

What is the range/payload/ and takeoff/landing distance like relative to the A318?

It would seem initially that the biggest plus point in the A318’s favour is crew and parts commonality with the rest of the Airbus narrowbody family.

To be honest, I also see the A318 as more in line with the 717.

Agreed, they can’t be THAT unsafe.

But these things are never black and white, for a variety of reasons. It is probable that they are materially less safe than an established Western airline but that they just about scrape along. Much as Aeroflot was reputed to have done in the early/mid 90’s, though I am told they are not too bad these days.

I agree that many older generation Euro aircraft were better in SOME respects than their US counterparts. However, I am struggling to explain away the enormous superiority of the US aircraft in the sales charts!

Really, with the advent of the Comet and the Viscount, Europe and the UK in particular should have squashed Boeing and Douglas!

Yes, the middle eastern carriers do know what they are doing.

I used to fly LHR-Bahrain 3 or 4 times a year in the 80’s and even back then Gulf Air were significantly better than BA. Both carriers used TriStars.

The irony is that even back then, a lot of the Gulf Air crews were Brits, mostly ex-BA!

    Rtn from LHR to JFK

    RE: Flying in Concorde

Cheaper to fly BA First Class, which is a significantly better service (it also beats Virgin’s Upper Class hands down, albeit at a premium)

Concorde is a little cramped but the legroom seems a little better than on their UK shuttle flights. The overall standard of the interior is first rate and you generally find the staff are the cream of BA’s crop.

Also, the new Concorde lounge at JFK is fabulous.

I’ve never sampled the Gallic version unfortunately.

    Okay, I’ll agree to disagree!

Let’s get back to commercial aviation, heh.

Kids are influenced by a variety of things, and I just do not see the logic of your arguments chaps.

What is so good about being Christian? As an atheist, I hope I am impartial to the conflicts between religions. Do not imagine for one second that religous indoctrination is a good thing. Witness the atrocities committed in the name of Christianity over the ages – from the Crusades to the present day violence in Ulster.

I was disgusted by the talk of lots of people post 9/11. It was common to hear comments like “lets bomb the hell out of the lot of ’em”

Are you telling me that wanting to bomb thousands of innocent people for no logical benefit is OK, whereas tearing up a bible is a no-no?

    RE: VC10 OR 707

I never flew on a VC10, though I hear they were a little more comfortable than 707’s due to the location of the engines – quiter in the cabin, esp. at the front.

The 707 was monstrously noisy, almost offensively so. Not a pleasant ride at all.

Hey Saab, we keep disagreeing don’t we!!

I’m not convinced Marilyn Manson is a promotion of satanism or of anything else for that matter. People should be free to make of it what they will; even the idea that people should be shoehorned into being god-fearing upsets me – free wills and open minds!

I don’t see how anyone can run down Marilyn Manson in the morality stakes yet still go for Freddie Mercury? He wasn’t exactly famous for his “god fearing morality” was he!

Okay, lets agree that we both live in great places!

The IOM is similar; slightly larger populace (75,000-ish) but much less densely populated. Similar tradition with pubs, but those outside Douglas are the type where locals read “What Tractor” or “What Combine” whilst chewing a bit of straw and they stare at strangers. Someone from Jersey once told me that St. Helier is like Douglas, except in St. Helier they paint the buildings!

RE: 1,000 posts special-Where are you all from?

Hey man, I wasn’t being literal!

Jersey and Guernsey are both beautiful places, and no offence was intended. It’s health rivalry, that’s all. My job involves anti-money laundering measures (I’m an accountant) and the press and outside agencies always measure the IOM against JER and GCI.

Equally ill thought out is your assertion of the predominance of criminal activity in the offshore centres. This is very rare, and in terms of laundering criminal money, London is the leading centre in Europe!! Even on a proportional basis, the offshore centres are “clean”. The bulk of the business is gained either because wealthy people wish to protect their assets from others (ie. place in in trust instead of using a will. Wills can be contested; trusts cant) or because companies see no reason to pay any more tax than they have to. Are you telling me you find this objectionable or ruinous of your island?

I’d be happy to deabate the workings of offshore finance with you but in the spirit of this forum, lets let this one lie for now.

I took it a year ago – one side affect is that you can feel very drowsy for the rest of the day. I had it at lunch time and returned to the office where I promptly feel asleep on the toilet! Very embarassing.
