If you travel from the UK then you’d tend to plump for BA or SAA simply because of the reasonable frequency on offer from LHR.

The big drawback of SAA is having to use the ghastly T1 at Thiefrow and the fact that the name of their in flight rag is unpronouncable!

An ex-girlfriend’s old man used to fly 1-11’s from Lagos for a couple of years – apprently the Lagos Airport series is politically correct and doesn’t show some of the more frightening security lapses. Unaccompanied hold baggage is not unheard of, I hear.

And let’s not omit to mention that KLM provide great AMS connections from the UK.

Trainee Virgins – I am serious! I saw a stewardess wear such a badge a few years back!!

Also whenever you are in a take off queue behind a Virgin aircraft, the Captain normally says something like “sorry for the delay, we’re being patient with the Virgin ahead of us”

At lease they seem to say that at JNB!

    RE: Manx Airlines

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-03-02 AT 10:34 PM (GMT)]I heard the other week that a new airline called “euro” something would be operating from the IOM. Yesterday, I saw a 146 with the EU flag on the tail parked up at Ronaldsway, which lends some credence to the rumour. No idea when flight might start, or where to.

    Any ideas????

Oh – the 146 carried the G-GNTZ reg.

Best route I’ve been on is JNB – Ndola (northern Zambia)

2 hour flight on ERJ-135, usually about 12 pax! Feels like you’re actually on an executive jet when there is that much room to spread out.

Also – BA periodically have a -145 mooching around in the Isle of Man and it seems to operate actual services from there. Not sure where to though.

They were supposedly the future of Manx Airlines!

Okay, strike actions apart (AF are hardly the only company in France to suffer this!) they aint a bad carrier.

    Oh –

Were you born in May 1987, judging from your handle?

Oh – I wasn’t referring to your examples as being 3rd world! Consider Zambia, Nigeria (anyone see the TV series Lagos Airport?) etc.

    CE process;

Firstly, assessment would no doubt need to be “impartial” which can only mean the UN. I do accept however, that this means no US airport could be given bad marks! Realistically this needs to be completely in the open for the sake of transparency. I would not lend much support to the argument “if we make this transparent, terrorists will know all our flaws”.

Secondly, airport closure might be difficult. Financial penalties might work though; a fixed percentage of airport revenue on a daily basis, until the faults are fixed. In the future, a tax on landing and handling prices to make the airlines apply pressure.

Every airport given a star rating, like hotels. 1 Star = avoid this airport, 5 Star = competent secrutiy procedures.

Do you consider there is a distinction between domestic and international travel at the airports you named?

Also, do you think we should tolerate low standards in the 3rd world just because of lack of funds or decent management?

Finally – should there be a global standard (a global “CE” mark) which all airports must meet. Failure would mean airport closure?

Do you know what their plans are for the 747 SP fleet?

I remember a rumour or possibly a story some time back that their 737-800 fleet would be replaced by A320s. Seems wierd, as the 737s actually replaced A320s in the first place.

I don’t think that criticism of a European state behemoth will offend anyone!

Good tip for JNB – if you stay at the Sun Intercontinental hotel just opposite the terminal, they have an indoor pool on the top floor. Pretty good view of airport movements and pretty cheap for us foreigners the way Rand is.

The difference between Virgin and BA is small, unless kiddy packs and “trainee virgin” badges impress you!

But Virgin uses too many smelly old B747-200s (or used to last year, don’t know about now)

Leave Air France alone! Though this might sound cliched – their cuisine is better than the others. Only travelled economy with them, but the comfort level was no better/worse than the others, staff were average.

How does anyone rate Virgin on the JNB and CPT runs?

    RE: Future of 146/Avro RJ?

    Agreed.

But it was a shame that BAE were not able to see the same gap in the market as Bombardier and Embraer saw. They developed new concepts and they paid off; BAE stuck EFIS and new engines on ancient designs.
