The only other example I remember is a BA Concorde leading the red arrows on a flypast down the Mall last year, for the Queen’s golden jubilee.
I think SIA ditched their A340’s because Boeing took them in as trade-in against 777’s.
BA went through a phase of basing 742’s and 744’s at LGW in the mid-late 1990s for flights to Africa and a few other destinations not important enough for LHR.
I think the 744 Lite was only ever intended for these ops, by the sound of the article. Presumably on such routes they decided the cargo loads were never going to be startling, so a “lite” would be more efficient. Then they went and mucked their fleet around and no one could think of a reason to still use the lites! Muddled planning by the sound of it.
I always thought KLM was the oldest airline?
Agreed.
The only possibility, is if some kind of very unlikely Euro open skies policy is unveiled and AF or LH fly routes originating at LHR.
I saw an An-124 at KEF last month. It really stood out, because the airport was totally deserted at the time and it seemed very out of place there.
I would guess that slot restrictions would be the only reason to fly the A380 in to LHR on short flights.
Certainly, that is why SAA are interested, as they have talked of ordereing 4 A380’s and they curently dedicate 4 B744’s for JNB-LHR operations and want to add more flights, but have been denied extra slots.
Apply the same logic to SQ and EK I reckon!
As an aside, Lufthansa regularly use the A300-600 (FRA-LHR) and Swiss use the A330-200 (ZRH-LHR) at peak times too. BA always used to use the L1011 LHR-CDG at peak times.
Oh, I didn’t know Finnair owned them.
Surely Flying Finn will create jobs though?
Scared of Loco competition do you think?
Ah, so they were a BA-only 744?
The airbiz article syas they were flown LGW-Africa so I guess I managed to fly on one of the rarest 747 types!
The -36 only applies to Boeing/BA as far as I know.
Also the A320-232 is operated by a number of different airlines.
Well I guess there is no golden rule Saab, it will be different in each situation. But LHR is an exception, as it will be A380-city.
Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Virgin Atlantic will all operate the A380 to LHR with presumably some aircraft based there permanently by VS.
I am fairly certain that Qantas will fly A380s to LHR too and Cathay Pacific and South African seem likely, too. And watch out for another couple of Asian carriers!
How long before BA choose the A380? I am convinced they will, as I see them retiring the 747 fleet in a decade or so and splitting it up between B777 and A380 operations.
Airlines already offer speedy clearance for 1st class passengers.
Also, what actually happens at Customs? You stand in a queue for an hour, hand over a bunch of forms with your passport, answer a few questions and wander off to get your bags. Then you have to wait for ages again, then sometimes it’s another queue to get into the arrivals area.
For an example of how NOT to do it, fly to the US or Australia!
Those guys are not immigration officials, they’re beaurocrats with shares in timber mills!!
But it isn’t extra cost.
The meal is included in the price, but you can deduct if and save £15 if you want. If you want it back again, you pay £15!
The airports’ owners, BAA.
Or are you trying to drive the idea that the cost will be passed on to passengers via airlines?
