Still having no luck on the name of the book. Anyone know the address of the publishing house that did “silksheen” or even if the author is still with us?

Maybe it would be too much to ask for this ship to sail home and into preservation?

The government are loathed to spend on our current fleet let alone preserve one that has been paid off. How the hell they are going to find the funds for the proposed super carriers I don’t know. Sounds a bit negative but the RAF/historic aircraft museums get more visitors as we remember the aircraft from our childhood flying over us. The RN fleet were seen less, normally going in and out of port and don’t have the “bums on seats ” pulling power. A real pity as there are/were some wonderful vessels worth saving. (I remember watching Bulwark rotting away in Portsmouth and Ark Royal in the Tamar before being scrapped . Shame)

Edit: Wasn’t there a movement for the preservation of Ark Royal 4?

The Jetstream won’t be scrapped. A new home has been offered for her and I would hope she will journey there in the fullness of time.

Good one. Glad she’s being saved. Pretty plane. Do you know where she is going and how come the staff didn’t know??

I have a copy of ‘Silksheen, The History of East Kirkby Airfield’ by Geoff D Copeman, sounds like the book you refer to.

Thats the author!!! Not the book though unfortunately, unless that too has some of her photos in as well. Might be an idea to contact them then.

    Thanks for that.

Along with the other regular cosford visitors on here, its a distressingly familiar scene. With metal prices sky high, this will become an all too common result to any aircraft that sits still for too long. 🙁

I think she is staying where she is, which means her starboard wing will cut off the “path” on that side (by the tail of the Wessex) but you should still be able to get a good shot. Apart from the Varsity and Comet, everything is more or less in place. I guess the idea is to have everything sorted for when the Cold War exhibit opens in feb.

The brooklands example was the only VC10 Cosford resident. As regards the Vicky tug film, its either her being tugged in when she arrived at Cosford or when she was moved off her stand to be dismantled to go to Brooklands. As in other posts, maybe we’ll get another when the VC10 is withdrawn from RAF service. After last nights news report on the RAF transport/tanker/logistics fleet, it may be sooner rather than later.

DH88 Comet. Beautifully elegant and a world beater. Can’t work out how to post a piccie so browse the net at your leisure!

It is the Vicky from Cosford, which I miss very much. That graceful tail was designed by a man with a pen and a piece of paper with a sense of theatre. I think Duxfords is now the closest to me here in Wolves? anyone know of any closer?

    RAF colours

The RAF repaint was what I had heard. I vaguely remember overhearing something when I was photographing the Viscount being dismantled. I should have been nosier!! I agree, she would look great in her proper clothes! Especially alongside other “transport” in hangar 1. I think the BOAC livery would look totally out of place alongside the Argosy and Andover etc.

The Museum is still in the middle of a major revamp so things are not all in their correct places yet I have been told

Badger617. Hangar 1 is like an Aviation version of an AutoJumble!!! 😀 If they have no room for some of the aero engines I can store them in my garage and give the neighbours a nice Sunday morning alarm call!! It will be nice when everything is in place. I go there around once a month on average and nothing has been static for very long recently. The RAFM should send all the staff on holiday for their excellent efforts recently. On the ‘packed in airframes’ theme, anyone know the ID and origin of the Wessex lurking against the hangar doors in hangar 1? I couldn’t make out any markings.
