Sorry, I should have made myself clearer. What I meant is that proof of insurance is mandatory at the point of re-registration. So if an aircraft changes hands 3 times a year, its insurance would be checked each time. If an aircraft does not change hands within 3 or 4 years, then it would be audited, or at least that’s how I understand it.
You are right, you could fly without insurance for 2 years (unless you have an accident or are caught in the meantime). However, that would be illegal, and in my opinion very silly! You could also drive your car without insurance, until such day that a police car number-plate recognition system flags it up and you get pulled over. If you don’t get pulled over, no-one knows any different!
By your theory, you could also cancel your insurance policy a week after your Annual/Permit renewal and then fly for 51 weeks a year without insurance. So how is it any better? Unfortunately regulation will never cover every possible scenario, and for that reason there has to be an element of trust that people will abide by the law without being forced to do so.
I would suggest that the audit only applies if the registered owner has not changed in those 3-4 years because if the aircraft is re-registered during that time then the new owner would have had to supply evidence of insurance at the point of re-registration anyway. Thus the CAA are being seen to monitor insurance compliance whether the aircraft is re-registered or not as the case may be during that rolling period (note that a change of address is not a change of registered ownership, if you changed address you wouldn’t be required to show insurance). I think 3-4 years is probably because monitoring it yearly would be a huge task, and it is of course the aircraft owner’s responsibility to ensure that their aircraft is insured correctly at all other times.
I don’t really post here any more but you may wish to see SEN’s latest progress from the air. I took a flight over the top last weekend to check out the building works so far. In the airport overview you can see works on the new taxiway, and in the close-up you can check out the new tower, terminal, train station etc. It looks like the apron is still a building site.

I rarely post here any more but this story really sticks in my throat.
I flew down to the IOW yesterday and dropped in to Shoreham for some fuel for the journey home. As always Shoreham was busy, aircraft approaching from East and West, some joining overhead and some being allowed to join crosswind, it certainly crossed my mind a few times ‘can you imagine if one of them cropped up on you out of the blue’. I could only do my best to look out how I’ve been taught, I still felt that if today is your day, then there might not be much you can do about it before it’s too late. It’s terrible news that almost exactly 24 hours later, someone in the very same place as me has met their fate in such an awful way. My thoughts are with all those involved.
Long time since I posted here but thought I should have my say!
Whilst I’m not implying that any of your friends are lying Sandy, I do believe you have to be careful what you hear particularly when it comes to Ryanair.
As they’re always such a talking point, rumours do tend to fly and it can all become a big game of Chinese whispers. This last weekend on the way home from Ireland, the guy behind me was telling his girlfriend how his parents had just got back from holiday and were apparently ‘disgusted’ to be on a flight with the pay-to-use toilet installed. Despite the newspaper articles at the time, we all know that that never has happened, and I doubt ever will!
One of my friends tried telling me that Ryanair charged him £5 for a sickbag, whilst another told me that he heard a story about Ryanair only employing one pilot, and that the First Officers weren’t qualified but just there to work the computers. It’s all rubbish, and you’d never hear similar rumours about other airlines! I’m not saying that Ryanair didn’t bring it all on themselves what with their various PR stunts, but some stories really do have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
I’ve just checked my flightmemory.com page which confirms that I’ve flown Ryanair 163 times since 2004. Out of those flights, the longest delay I’ve ever had is 2 hours, with several 30 min-1 hour delays thrown in here and there. Of all those bookings I’ve never paid more than the booking confirmation page tells me. I have only once had a booking amended, when Girona airport was due to be closed for industrial action. They moved the flight to Barcelona (the real genuine El Prat / BCN / whatever you want to call it!) and I had to click ‘I confirm to the changes’ on an e-mail they had sent me, otherwise they kept sending me daily SMS messages/e-mails until I did so.
Problem Solved!
:cool:Flickr have re-vamped their website (in other words just made it more flashy and complicated!) meaning I’ve had to go a really long way round to get those links – should be sorted now. Hope it’s worth it!
Still no idea why these photos won’t show.
However, if you right-click and go to ‘Properties’ you can copy the link from there.
Well the links work for me if I right click on them but if no one else can see them then the mods may as well delete the thread….I’ve used my usual method of upload so have no idea why they won’t work. I’ve simply copied the image URL’s in to the insert IMG function on the forum but for some reason they’re not showing.
Hmm if I right click on the images (IE and Google Chrome) it gives me an option to copy link, or open image in a new tab. Really no idea why it’s not working! Hmm…
Yeah strange, I used exactly the same method as always. If you right click on the links and elect to open in a new window/tab it seems to work and you can see them that way
Is that not the sound you want to hear? 😀
Indeed, I just thought it was very impressive (and a clever PR move from RR I would say…) that the 787 was so quiet it could not be heard above the old Spitfires. You can imagine just how quiet and peaceful the 787 must be inside to fly on as a passenger.
I was at Farnborough yesterday and saw her depart to EMA. Before setting off, she came back in for a flyby with a Spitfire on each wing (I’m guessing the RR connection….Merlin engine vs Trent). I kid you not, we could all hear the 2 Spitfires, but could NOT hear the 787 above the noise of the 2 Merlins. Very strange to watch!
Nice work Keith…if you get up there sharpish today you might catch our smart Legacy G-IRSH due to depart at 1400!
Thanks for the comments.
What time does the UPS arrive?
It’s normally due about 21:40 from Philadelphia, so this is about the only 2 weeks of the year where you stand a chance of catching it in sunlight. Luckily for me on this day, it actually arrived over half hour early at 21:05!
Where did you make these photos? I have been to STN once or twice and never had good luck spotting there. Is the place easily accesible by foot / public transport?
This mound is North side of the runway, unfortunately there is absolutely no way here by public transport…there’s not even a nearby village within the next couple of miles! In terms of public transport, the absolutely only place you can reach is the approach field when they’re on RWY05, which is only 25% of the time so it’s a bit of a gamble if you’re flying over for the day. If you could get a cheap hire car for the day, then it’s a very easy 5 mile drive from round the terminal side.
