Great pics, lucky to see the Air France A318! I was hoping to take a ride up STN this evening, but clouds have come in. Quite a lot due in tonight, and I know FCA and TCX have replaced some of their A320 flights with 757’s which is a bit more interesting.
Thanks a lot everyone! Makes it all a lot more worth it. You can now click on my jetphotos.net link in my signature to see some full size versions of the shots. I now have 70 accepted to jp, around 40 of them are from my latest trip. May also be some on there that I didn’t put up on here either.
All of the ex-Go aircraft are based at STN, although they do fly from LTN aswell. We also get LTN’s aircraft (ie. the original Easyjet aircraft). Usually the -300’s, but we’re starting to get more and more -700’s. Roll on the 319’s!
Great shot, I was quite surprised at Qantas’ dominance at SIN when I passed through. At one point, there was a row of 5 QF744’s and 1 743 along the pier at Terminal 1. However, it doesn’t take much to work out why. This is the stopover for all flights between Europe and the Middle East and Australia.
Thanks a lot for all the kind comments! And thanks Britannia for rating it 🙂 NCLRULES,it’s funny you say that as my last EZY trip report was commented on by a couple of members as being one of the best of the year! 😀 Now I have a standard to keep up though, and it can be very time consuming!
I wasn’t even specifically searching for any of your flights, I was just browsing the ‘most popular of last 24-48 hours’ on airliners.net and came across it. Just came across this one too:

Although, I guess it was taken too early for you to be on it. 🙂
Just as I began to get excited, seeing as I flew on May 8th……I saw it was 2003! Ah well, still quite a coincidence! Same plane, same place, same date….just the wrong year 🙂
Remind me, what day did you leave KK? I can’t believe I just found a pic of some random guy taking a oicture of your aircraft while you were departing, and in such a remote place. Surely not!? 😉
Wow! It actually is. I departed KK on the 14th at around 16:30, finally arriving back at LHR on Saturday 15th morning. Yay, I was on that plane! I think the guy who took it is a Malaysia Airlines pilot, he seems to be at KK all the time, and gets a lot from the cockpit aswell. I’ve just been searching the aviation sites for any shots of the other aircraft I’d flown on, but didn’t think to check that flight when it was in such a remote location! 😀
Have you ever been to STN for a proper day of spotting? If not, can you back up why it’s so ‘boring’? I’m very sure that you’d spot a lot of things you’ll never get to see at MAN. Fair enough, we don’t have many ‘quality’ carriers, and that is something we truly do lack. But there are a huge amount of different lo-co’s here offering routes right across Europe for prices cheaper than you’ll find anywhere else in the UK. Just think how great that is for someone like me, or anyone else living in the local area. I doubt MAN get many of our rarer movements either. For example the An-124’s we quite regularly see, and the Saudi Arabian Royal flights that pass through frequently.
We’ve nearly caught up now with just one runway, I think that as soon as our new one is built, if not before, we’ll soon overtake in PAX figures atleast. That is unless MAN has a sudden wave of expansion, in which case we may find ourselves in the same position. But with our current rate of expansion being twice that of MAN, it would mean we will overtake somepoint next year. Sorry guys, the lo-co’s are biting back!
Were the very first jet engines also so advanced (around 1950)?
You could say they were, as everything was a lot more complicated back then. In those days they tended just to have the single shaft and compressor, meaning that to produce the same amount of power, a higher amount of fuel and input was needed. Nowadays, they have more efficient ways of producing the power. In most modern airliners, they use a bypass system, where a large amount of the energy is actually created without having to use any fuel at all, and air is simply fed through the outside area of the engine. As you can probably tell, I’m no expert on this! GZYL could probably elaborate a lot more, I’m just trying to remember things I’ve picked up in books over the years.
I think that is the plan wth the Trent-1000 GZYL. With the -900 they are already having to combat a lot of new ideas that Airbus want. RR have found themselves a bit stuck at the moment though, because unless they find other composites, they’ll have to use more material to make it stronger. More material means more weight, and for every 1kg extra that RR use, they will be charged £10,000 by Airbus.
With the -1000 they are going to need to make it more efficient in the way you mentioned. However, it seems that Boeing this time are expecting too much. They want to have a 20% more efficient engine, which they may be able to achieve if it was designed like that. But, Boeing also want to run all of their electrical power off of the engine aswell, and not have to carry anything such as batteries on board. That way, there is less weight and more room left in the plane to make it live upto it’s expectations.
Yes FR does get a bit boring after a while. But can you travel to pretty much anywhere in Europe for dirt cheap, from your door step?! 😉
Alongside Ryanair and Easyjet, we have a lot of other interesting stuff, albeit most of them being lo-co’s. Think, we see Norwegian Air Shuttle, Iceland Express, CSA, Malev, FedEx, Channel Express, TNT, Titan, NCA Cargo, JAL Cargo, Helios, Sky Europe, Transavia, Basiqair, Global Supply, Germanwings, Asiana, ELAL, Aurigny, Air Berlin, UPS, Onur Air, KTHY, Air Polonia, Martinair and several others that you will also see at MAN.
Also starting up new this year include Iberworld, Spanair, Virgin Express, North American Airlines, Zoom, Dragonair Cargo, Euro Atlantic etc etc. We have a lot to offer, and with about 15 new operators already starting this year, it looks set to continue.
Yes, more than likely 757. 767 would seem too risky for a new route that has never been tried nefore I would think.
I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much. They cancelled their STN service after Sept 11th eventhough the loads were very good. If they don’t feel it is worth operating from STN, then I don’t see how they will find it necessary to use Bristol or Newcastle in the near future.
They can fit 8 737’s in there. The most full I’ve ever seen it is with 6.
Just noticed Blackpool, up 95% from last year! 😮
Obviously due to the Ryanair start up, but still! The airport’s executives must be having a whale of a time.
