Well I’m all booked! Turns out I’ve had to go for the 7 hr connection after all, as I wanted an extra day in Bangkok and the 2 hr connection wasn’t available if I stayed an extra day.
So I’m flying LGW-DXB-KUL on 777-200/777-300 10th October, going to spend a couple of days around Kuala Lumpur and then a week in Vietnam. Then after a couple of nights in Bangkok I’ll be returning BKK-DXB-LHR A380/A380 22nd October. All for £393, not bad at all!
Mr Creosote, I booked direct on Emirates.com. It took a little playing around with various dates but in the end I found loads of results around this price.
Thanks for the input everyone. I actually have a 5 hr connection on the outbound which I think will be bearable, I’ll still be feeling fairly fresh and can kill most of that time on the internet and having a little walk around.
I think I have decided though that on the inbound I will go for the 2 hr connection, meaning only one flight on the A380 and the other being a 773ER. After sweating it out in South-East Asia for 2 weeks I think a 7 hr connection would be a bit too much, and after all one flight on the A380 is all you really need!
That’s interesting T5, I’ve heard some amazing things about them. The food menu’s look great and 34″ leg room on the 773 really can’t be frowned upon either, that’s almost biz-class on short-haul European carriers!
Lukeylad, I’ve heard about those stopovers. I think they only apply though if you’re in a particular Economy booking class (and I doubt £393 rtn is going to be in one of those classes!)
You’d be surprised by how active Stapleford is. There are, I think, at least two flying schools on the airfield. May even be three.
Stapleford is indeed busy, there are around 40 aircraft on the ground here. There is only one flying school though, who do the full PPL, CPL, ME/IR etc training using a range of C152, PA28, PA34 and Diamond Twinstar. There are then about 20 private based aircraft, along with my company’s (LEA) two Kingairs.
Some interesting catches there Peter! Hopefully you caught our Mustang G-LEAI today, in from Farnborough and out to London City around midday.
Must be a mistake, the A330 doesn’t have the range to reach LHR. (Point in case: Air Asia X needed an A340 to run KUL-STN, which is roughly 100nm shorter than SIN-LHR).
Interesting, it seems that Kayak and Expedia have the wrong info. Have checked on OAG and the A380 is still timetabled in November….although it appears that the 773 will be taking over the 744 flights at some point.
This is terrible. Looks like the aircraft was N526FE, ex N813DE of Delta. I flew on this aircraft from Gatwick-Atlanta in February 2002, my only MD-11 flight and now she is no more. What a horrible thought, may the crew RIP.
Doesn’t look good. Struggling to work out what’s going on in the video as it’s pretty poor quality. Would I be right in saying it bounced majorly on first touch down, then touched down heavily for second time on nose or left undercarriage? At some point in the second touch down the aircraft has contacted and caught alight, some how cart-wheeling. I’m not speculating, just seeing if anyone agrees with what I think I can see in that video. I hope all on board got out ok.
edit: from the BBC video it would seem the left undercarriage is missing and centre main is bent. Could the left have collapsed on that second touch down?
edit 2: just realised two MD-11s (FedEx, Newark 1997 and China Airlines, Hong Kong 1999) have previously suffered gear failures on hard landings which have ended up with the aircraft on their backs.
Hmm, maybe if you sorted out the unlevel horizons and learnt how to use your camera they might be ok, better luck next time.
….ha! Quality shots mate, G-VRED looks damn good and is the bird I flew to JFK on almost an entire year ago.
P.S I’m on night shift at work, give me a bell if you want a quick chat before the big day 😉
Thanks for the insight chaps.
I’m used to cruising at approx 90kts in the C152, is that kind of cruise speed achievable in the C150 too? Interesting about the ASI on the C150 generally being in MPH, definitely something to take note of especially on approach! Don’t want to be getting your speeds mixed up.
As an aside, how about the 172. Would I be right to say a cruising speed of 105kts or so is possible in the 172? If true then on anything longer than a 90 min sector it could actually work out cheaper to fly the 172 than the 150 (£74p/h vs £90p/h)
Sorry to bang on about cruising speeds, I just find that published speeds are quite different to what you can actually achieve once up there flying for real.
Sorry to bring this one back up, just thought I’d add my experience from today.
I flew down to Marseille for the day. Great flights and very professional/attentive Marseille based French crew. For the first time in a long while the crew actually walked up and down the cabin all flight (even after selling everything) making sure pax were ok (anyone else noticed that crew from the smallers bases, MRS, HHN, CIA etc seem much more professional and not such a run-of-the-mill service you get from STN/DUB based crews?).
On to the point, I think RYR have gone a bit too far with this latest free-publicity media gag. In the queue for both flights I overheard several people saying “Did you know they’re going to start charging for the toilet now?” , “My son/mum/friend flew Ryanair last week and had to pay for the toilet!”, “If they do start charging then that’s the final straw, I won’t be flying them again”.
It’s pretty much confirmed that Ryanair’s comments were false and were meant just to get people talking, but I’m feeling it hasn’t quite had the desired effect?
Excellent work Huw! I’ve decided that LTN is now one of my first choices for London airports after a very successful trip there a few weeks ago in the snow. Also great to see two aircraft I’ve flown on, G-BYCP and G-KSFR 😀 Keep up the good work hope to see more from you soon.
Nice shots, glad you caught G-KSFR at EDI after I left her behind at Cambridge!
Nice shots there, Just out of interest do you ever fly with Andy Mac? I see you flew G-BYCP aswell the other week? If you are ever bound for Norwich Let me know and I will come and take some snaps
Mike
Haha yes we all know Andy Mac. How do you know him? He’s flown me home from Dublin once on another of the fleet.
Great selection of pics there Wannabe Pilot.
I am suddenley filled with jealousy that you got to fly in a private jet?!;):p
Cheers cloud_9. It’s actually my 3rd time this month (not on that aircraft though) but I’ve chosen not to show the pics, mainly because they were night flights so nothing really worth showing!
