I just woke up to hear about this on the local news. Very sad and it highlights the dangers faced by the Loganair Islander air ambulance crews working in the conditions that they do.
I was working til midnight last night, the estimated time of the crash. And if the weather here in Glasgow was anything to go by, then it must have been pretty bad out in Campbeltown ? Although they’re saying weather was not a factor.
Condolences to those concerned. 🙁
Was it G-BOMG? The cloud base was at 400ft and the airfield is 44 foot above sea level, so it does not leave much room for error.
The Islanders have no GPWS and possibly no GPS, well apart from a Garmin 3 which does not highlight terrain. It was at night, low cloud on approach – not weather related? But in saying that the a/c crashed into the sea, so high ground may not have been a factor.

Sad. It was only a few weeks ago that I posted my thoughts on how well they do to fly in the worst of weather in ill equipped planes.
My thoughts are with thier families. One of our club memebrs is a paramedic who regularly flies in the Loganair Islander :(.

What’s a “damp lease” is that a plane with soggy carpets? :p
No, it’s a plane with dodgy engines that regularly flies over water and often ends up in the drink. :p

British Midland retired the DC-9 from service quite a few years ago, DME.
Are you perhaps thinking of the Fokker 70s and Fokker 100s?
No, I’m thinking of the DC-9. Now I’m thinking of SAS’ DC-9’s, Air Uk Leisure 737/767. Air UK’s 146/F100. Northwests DC10. Aer Lingus F27/F50. BCAL’s Tri-Stars. Brymons Dash 7. BAF Viscounts. Ah the good ol’ planes with character 🙂

Ah, makes sense now.
It’s been a while now since I’ve seen those DC-9’s bombing about GLA – nice little planes too.
