On thinking about the smoking ban, long term, I assume it will stop the younger generation smoking. If they are going out pubbing and clubbing, then I guess they will not light up as it will be difficult / annoying to go outside for a cig.

So it may be annoying for smokers right now, but it should stop the younger generation starting. My only worry is if they stop, where is the money going to come from to fund the government 🙁 .

In summary it’s a good thing, but I don’t like the way the MP’s just brought it in without taking a poll / vote on it.

    Robbo,

I know smoking is unhealthy, but if you expect smokers to give up / smoke in private, should it not be the same for others.

What if some crazed warrior stated all cars are bad, they are hurting people. Would you stop driving (if you drive). Or would you fight it, stating it’s my choice etc?

I’ve heard smokers pay for their own treatment by ways of tax imposed on cigs. I wonder if their contribution exceeds their medical care requirements, hence money left over?

    Its not that simple DME

Yes, of course it’s not that simple. It’s easy to ban smoking, but harder to give up a car, heat etc.

I was trying to make the link that people are saying don’t force your habits on me, but when others have it turned on them i.e. try and get them to stop – it’s excuses 🙁

Yes it’s sad re Roy Castle, but passisve smoking can’t kill that many people. The risk of a non smoker getting lung cancer is estimated to be 0.01 per cent (don’t know how accurate this is, I read it in a local paper) I think cars killed over 3000 people in the U.K. last year, yet we still drive because it’s convenient.

I should be able to enjoy a smoke-free pub. Why should smokers have the right to make the atmosphere unpleasant for others? Freedom’s fine up to the point where it has an adverse effect on others – that’s the point where people should have more consideration for others rather than selfishly indulging in smoking.

Do you drive a car, fly in a plane, use electricity and pollute the environment/other people?

If yes, then would you stop and start living like a cave man?

If you were to cook an animal on an open fire, would that not cause pollution to your lungs and others?

You would have to eat the animal raw, live with no heat have no cars etc in order to say you will not harm others! If you were to live like this i.e. not imposing your byproducts on to others, then yes I agree you have the right to say smokers should not impose their habit onto you! If not then you’re just imposing your byproducts, like exhaust fumes etc, onto others, thus being a tad hypocritical.

I think drinking in the street is legal in Ireland?

What is going to happen when you are in a Pub, want a cig and have got a half full pint. Do you leave it in the pub, go outside for a smoke, come back and find it’s been tampered with. I’m sure drinking in the street is banned in Scotland, so you can’t take it with you!

Will this not spur along an interest in private smoking clubs – possibly members only?

It would leave the locals, like where I drink, with no one there.
If I go in on say a Wednesday and have a few pints, there will be about 12 people in the Bar, they all smoke. I don’t, so would that leave only me in the Bar when the new law comes in? I doubt all the non smokers who were allegedly staying away from the smokey atmosphere will turn up in droves!!

I can see the health benefits, if it’s bad, ban it.

An alternative could be, all smokers stop for a year and watch the government squirm and cope with a massive loss of revenue 😡

It would like to know how much pollution, on average, a commuter travelling into a busy city would take in, and compare it with the health risks of passive smoking?

It all sounds good from a spectators point of view.

I just hope that they keep some of the money they are spending and put it to uses like, clearing ice/snow from taxiway W and the short 🙁

Keeps the little ones from flying at times.

It is good to see them thinking about the people who don’t make them money though.
