A quote from the J-8 ‘Finback’ article in Last February’s AFM
Contrary to some early reports, however, the J-8 was not based on the Russian aircraft (Ye-152), nor did the Shenyang team members receive any assistance from their Russian couterparts. In fact, behind the superficial similarity, there was a great deal of difference between the two designs. The Chinese fighter was more slender in shape, and had a longer-chord wing, while the radome’s pitot intake was small and well-hidden.
Like most MiG fighters (though not the Ye-152), the J-8 relied on a small fence on the upper surface of each wing near the tip to prevent spanwise migration of the boundary layer, thereby reducing drag.
