Perhaps the solution may then be for a channel to re-instate a show like Fith Gear for people like you and keep Top Gear going for people like us 🙂

Do Al Q have recruits from all walks of life? Including Nigerians? Or is it perhaps that this nutter just claimed to be, to be dramatic or the like….

Whatever the case, he should not have been able to get something like that on board, Schipol security will have red faces right now.

And why did he wait till the very end of the flight? Surely the biggest effect would be during cruise when the aircraft is fully pressurised and there is no hope for recovery. Depending on the magnitude of the explosive, they may have been able to recover on descent with just a chunk in the fuselage missing.

I still like it as it is, but it’s all opinion I guess.

I was told once it is the most downloaded show in the World. Shame the BBC don’t gain from that.

Payphones don’t exist don’t they? Then you can really watch what you’re spending. Also, I’m not if this is what Sky High meant, but you can get Skype itself on your mobile. Not too sure how it works, but it is certainly cheaper.

Another option would be a Broadband stick? Again….load the laptop with Skype and talk whenever, wherever.

In case of the B787 (and the A350) I think they jumped on the “advanced materials” band waggon a bit too quick, sometimes I see no specific reason to use CFRP.
Only a fraction of the quoted “20%” (which is actually versus a B767-300 on a long range mission, versus A330 or B777 the difference is single digit percentage, mission dependent of course) is due to savings in structural weight.

By the way: the L1011 was technically a great aircraft, having many unique features. Just: civil aircraft don’t sell by being advanced but by being competitive in pricing and operational costs. Boeing never really pushed technology that far, but always created very competitve packages.

Is this not a contradiction? Aircraft can be very competitive in pricing and operational costs due to weight (and fuel) savings.

As already mentioned, at the end of the day, any weight/operational saving is for the better. Over the lifetime of the aircraft, the 787 will save tremendous amounts in comparison to aircraft of years past. And if the A380 gets the loads when the market picks up again, then it too will get terrific operational savings from seat per mile costs.

I’m glad that Boeing finally got it flying , but I’m wondering whats going on.
When the A380 took to the skies we were inundated with news and press releases about it for weeks on end , the papers were full of articles on it ,but there is nothing about the 787 ,And I’m wondering why?
I’m also Concerned with the amount of wing flex on take off ,just doesn’t look quite right to me , was this Full weight take off or was it a empty weight take off ?

With regards to the A380 media coverage, perhaps it is/was because the A380 LOOKS significantly more different than ‘traditional’ aircraft and something that the every-day person (who knows nothing about planes) could read/look at in a newspaper and grasp. The 787 on the other hand, looks a lot more traditional (767 with a body-kit) but is crammed full of technological advancements – something the every-day reader won’t necessarily appreciate. My guess.

With regards to the wing flex, all the pictures I’ve seen of the 7E7/787 from the start have shown a massive curvature to the wings. I don’t think it was an accident they looked so flexed the other day, I believe it is all in the design.

With regards to this whole AvB thing, the first thing that springs to mind for me is that most people have largely forgotten about the troubled EIS for the A380. Sure, the media love reporting on every single little technical fault the aircraft is having, because it is still a new airplane, but I don’t think it is still tarnished with (perhaps) disappointing initial production to EIS record. My point is, that what are problems now will be a thing of a past 5 years down the line.

Let’s hope the A350 has a seamless EIS, so that we can stop this trend of w*lly waving 😉

None of this ‘let’s see what happens’/’it’s not that special’/’it won’t work’ etc. What has happened, is that aviation HAS taken a jump in evolution today/yesterday.

Think about when they first made aircraft out of metal instead of wood? Or when they first used enclosed fuselages instead of big ‘canoes’. And when they took that leap to pressurizing the cabin. Today they have moved from metal to the next step – composite.

And it’s hardly a ‘plastic pig’, when Airbus are following them with the same idea and no doubt narrowbody manufacturers are thinking the same also – Bombardier/Embraer/ATR etc. One day the majority of aircraft will be composites and we will all be flying in ‘pigs’.

It may look like a sexed up 767/777 but it’s what inside that counts 😉
